We are using Wax to edit, but the quality is really bad in the finished project. We render the video as an uncompressed avi file, but the quality is still really poor. Any suggestions?
Get new editing software. I know that sounds really sarcastic but it's not meant that way. If I was you, I'd invest in some new software. I'm not saying you should go out and buy Vegas Pro right now. In fact, right now I can't afford it. But, I would try and find a nice $50-$150 software. Try Pinnacle 15. I use the 14 version and it's pretty good. It also exports HD videos too. But there are other good cheap editing software out there. And in the future, you might want to invest in Vegas Pro.
Do a google search on an old version of Adobe Premiere Pro...I saw it priced at $50 dollars on time...don't remember where it was though. 
Thanks guys, we will look in to these suggestions, but as for now, does anyone have an answer to this question?
You need to change your render settings, I use wax to and They turn out fine. Watch my tut and you will see my settings.
