I use Avira. My dad is super careful to prevent hacking, so I know that Avira will do a pretty good job for free.
But if you download a file then immediately scan it, you're fine. I download sound files and music all the time and scan it with AVG and my computer is super safe!
Just cough up the money or know your stuff. I've not had antivirus for a while now it's not that hard to keep yourself safe, just be careful of what you download.
