well, i'm working on this set (it's an underground sewer type of thing) and i'm wanting to make that lower area look like it's filled with some kind of disgusting old water and stuff.
any suggestions?
i thought real water and food coloring would work, but would it slip through the bricks?
You could try some cheap hair gel. Nice neon colors available...
Good luck cleaning that afterwards though. 
Water will leak, i think.
Heh. I animated water once. It worked okay...
But I saw this TV show in which people tried to build a whole house out of legos, and when they built the toilet it leaked a lot, so I think legos aren't the best thing for that. Maybe add in some reinforcements so the water doesn't leak out, like wax or something...

Heh heh, just kidding. I agree with boardron about the hair gel thing. Or you could make some CGI water like Smeagol for Unrenewable. If you did use water, it might work, but it will take a long time to animate because you will have to wait for the water to settle.
i found a good mixture!
i put green and red food coloring in orange soap.
...looks pretty disgusting
Sounds pretty awful looking.... It should look great! 
Maybe paint some plastic wrap with water color paints or something like that?
That is, if you water mixture doesn't turn out like you want it.
Why not combine the two ideas, use the hair gel on top of the plastic wrap, this way you get a good mixture, along with easy cleanup.
Howabout putting a couple drops of oil with your mixture?
Also, try lining your set with tape or putting a bin at the bottom, for less leaking.
Oil in water? The oil will float, unless that is the desired effect
It gives of some cool, sewer-like colors and texture. Besides, there's oil in real sewer water.

I'd put the entire set in a bin, adding more bricks under it if necessary, and securing the set with bricks extending outside the bin.
Maybe a bit late but I would have just built a wall out of 1-wide brown bricks and laid it on its side in the pit. No mess, no clean-up.
I'd use real Lego e.i.: clear studs and clear 1x2 bricks, dark green translucent 1x1 tiles and cheese slopes and studs, or dark blue translucent 1x1 tiles and cheese slopes and studs. unfortunately these ideas might be a bit hard to animate.

Maybe you could cut out a piece to fit into the water area.
Brick based water is cool, if you lock the camera down you can animate some brick based water, loop that animation and then animate whatever else you want to in the scene. I have had good luck with this.
Water will slip through the bricks, I tried it when I was 8 or 9, I played with water and lego bricks Made a mess.
I once used a clear, zip up pencil case for water.
I cut it up with scissors, and put it on top of grey, flat LEGO plates.
It's looked good, but didn't have the capability to move very much...
