how can I animate something smashing, shattering, or just breaking in half. For example a lamp broken over ones head, would I need to use stick tack?
It depends what's breaking in your shot. If a lamp was falling on someone's head, then in the first frame it would be above the head, then in the second frame it would be in two pieces on either side of the head, then in the next ones it would be falling down the rest of the unfortunate character's body.
