Topic: Choosing a Computer

Well, since my 2006 macbook is getting slow then I am not sure on what to get. I am currently debating between 2 computers:
Macbook (2010) vs Mac Mini (2010) with 20 inch display

I do not care about the price or the fact that one is portable I just care about the power. Which is more powerful? Which is better for brickfilming? Which is better for gaming? Please help the best you can.

What's the point of making brick models if your little brother destroys them?

Re: Choosing a Computer

You defiantly look like an Apple sort of guy.  Well first of all, what is your budget?  Macs cost almost always over 1,000 dollars.  MacBook's are not very powerful.  If I were you and if I had the money I would get a MacBook Pro.  The new Thunderbolt performance looks amazing.  MacBooks are for homework and playing those games that Macs have.  MacBook Pro is my suggestion.

The wonderful operating system that will solve all your problems. And 80% of the companies that make computers with it will let you keep your shirt and house. My sister got a laptop for a few hundred dollars (I think it was $400.)

RealBrick I know you love your Windows but come on this poor kid loves apples.  Do what is right.  If that sounded weird then I agree.

I am pure apple and I repeat, those are the only 2 I want and I also do not care about the price.

Re: Choosing a Computer

As much as I'd hate to choose a side on the OSX vs 7 fight, I'm going to have to say go with Windows. You can buy an extremely good computer for the price of a Macbook. This will give you so much better of animating and editing ease to go with rather than both of those options you gave us.

I'm just saying that MacBook Pros are obviously better.  Well if you don't want to listen to me then get a Mac Mini.

Re: Choosing a Computer

Sorry binding bricks is that I just have an issue with the macbook pros and that is that since I am not in the states then they are extremely expensive, I already said I was Macbook vs Mac Mini and I am not gonna turn to Windows.

Re: Choosing a Computer

Okay.  Now.  We all better shut up before another poor thread turns into a Mac vs. PC discussion and then it gets closed.  Also GreatModels just get what ever is more powerful, that's the simple answer.

Re: Choosing a Computer

So if you are only looking for a Macbook, or mini. I'd say get a Macbook then. More portability and then you have greater specs than the Mini (which I've heard is a hell of an issue to upgrade specs)

Re: Choosing a Computer

Macbook:
Pros: Portable, greater specs, Mac OS X.
Cons: Not so powerful, little screen.

Mac Mini:
Pros: Greater Power, Big Display, Mac OS X, more upgradable RAM.
Cons: Not Portable, specs.

A Pro for one that could unbalance everything is gaming, please tell me which one could be better for gaming.

Please respond and help me here.

Hahaha that's freaking hilarious. mini/blankexpression

I've got a Mac mini for ainmating and now I'm wishing I had gotten a MacBook.
Just hook up a keyboard, mouse and the display and put it into desktop mode for animating, and then you can just unplug all the cords and take it anywhere if you need it. Just save stuff onto external drives so it doesn't clog the HD of the Mac Book (they're only like 320 GB, right?).

Just get an adapter for your display since the MacBook has the mini-display port.

What I love about you Apple people is that you're always saying that Apple's the best but I bet half of you even own a Windows computer. mini/blankexpression For those who don't need the eyecandy of OS X Windows is the cheaper and better option.

Greater specs but less powerful? Those two statements seem a little conflicting. mini/wink If you really are a die hard Apple and those are the only two models you want to get than get the Mini unless of course you want the portability of a Macbook. They both have the same specifications except the Mini can hold a 8gb of Ram as opposed to the 4gb that the Macbook can hold.

Re: Choosing a Computer

I use a 2010 macbook pro, and to put into perspective how much I like it, there hasn't been a day since christmas when I got it where I haven't used it. It's fantastic. I personally would go with the Macbook, being as you can take it places. I get my mum to drop mine off at my school at the end of the day for when I do animation club. Also, If your using a camcorder you need to take note of the ports you need. I was quite lucky, my mac has a firewire cable with it so I can use my camcorder, others don't have that. I mean, you can probably buy an adapter for it, but that will make it go slower.
Both are great computers, if you want one to take places then go with the macbook.
Also, about the gaming, the new Mac app store has some great games on it.

Re: Choosing a Computer

Thank you to those all that have responded I am glad so many people responded. mini/smile However there is still some doubt as some people favour the mac mini and others the macbook. Now for the ones that have recommended a PC I will not buy but yet do not take it wrong. Now I have taken my descision, I will buy the Macbook with a 20 inch apple display and I will upgrade the RAM to 4GB. Thanks for all the responses and good luck everyone. mini/wink

Re: Choosing a Computer

Sounds like a good set up to me, as I said though, bear in mind what ports you need.

Re: Choosing a Computer

I have already analyzed, however I just wish the macbook was more powerful, nevertheless I will soon have a new macbook and the best part: my old one will be traded for a PS3 yipeeeeee! mini/delirium
