Re: To curse or not to curse...

Yes I have, he's asking whether or not to use curse words in his film - not which words are more offensive then others. Just thought we should maybe get away from that to avoid breaking forum rules. That's all I meant.

Re: To curse or not to curse...

Here is what I think, most of the truely funny brickfilms I have seen have no swearing in them. Most of the time I think people stick curse words in when they can't think of anything else to say. Good writing can usually overcome not using curse words. Also I feel that making films more familiy friendly helps create a larger audience. (Also when I think swearing, and brickfilms I think of the loads of mediocre brickfilms that are all over the internet now, where they swear just because they think it sounds cool.)

Exactly! It just makes people sound like they can't come up with anything else to say.

Re: To curse or not to curse...

NO thank you. I feel that curse words are not even funny, people just use them when they can't think of anything else to say. "What the fudge" sounds pretty funny though (those exact words, not the nasty version)

Re: To curse or not to curse...

Not that I agree with it. but sometimes swear words can help the film if you use them the correct way. For example swearing for humor is not funny at all but if you are making a serious film sometimes swear words might actually make the film sound better or even help the overall story.

But if you really need to swear don't bleep it out!!! (BLEEP sounds ruin a film) mini/sunnies

Re: To curse or not to curse...

Well I have decided not to do cursing in my videos except when its a serious matter and most times I will only use damn in that situtation.

Bleeps don't ALWAYS ruin a film.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJMBSC5uIf8

Re: To curse or not to curse...

dont curse, it subtracts from the cartoonyness and comedy of the minifigs them selves,
and you will get less views (trust me)

That would have been funnier if the bleeps were really nasty swears.
Also, imagine Superbad without swearing.

Re: To curse or not to curse...

Unfortunantely in a society like today, cursing is funny. I mean, one or two in a film I don't mind, as long as they aren't F words. I don't find cursing funny, I find it pathetic that people use cursing for humor. If it was a serious film set in the past where cursing was meant to show anger or frustration, then that's fine. But if you  curse just to make someone laugh, then it's just dumb.

Re: To curse or not to curse...

I don't understand the huge social stigma attached to swear words. Is saying the S WORD(!) really more offensive than the word 'poop?' That being said, said social stigma exists, so consider what audiences you want to attract when creating your particular works.

Re: To curse or not to curse...

Cursing is only as bad as you make it. In other words, it you call someone stupid, and mean it, it's worse then calling them a b****x and not meaning it.

Re: To curse or not to curse...

I have a motto about this subject: Bad words are, well, bad. xD
I don't think it could be said any better. mini/smile
Happy is he who has a clean tongue. ^.^
And as Ninja Studios said, it takes away from the cartooniness. And some people will not want to watch your movies.
Also, there are plenty of other great things to say instead, like "gabatay" (literally meaning "I'm frustrated"). Or things like "Oh my golden goat!" which I use a lot.
It is also a general fact that bad words are used in a grammatically incorrect, or descriptively incorrect context.
They are pure fail.

Re: To curse or not to curse...

Agreed. On YouTube, you never know who's watching. IMO, make films with language that you can show to your grandma, and your 5 year old cousin. If a little kid sees a film with the F word in it, the kid will most likely ask their mom, "Hey Mom? What does %&?@ mean?", and that's most likely how the world got so peverted. THE END. mini/tongue

Re: To curse or not to curse...

yea, I dislike swear words because I think that they are bad scripting, in TOY there should be no swear words(if the film is before 1900) because i dare say that they would not have used such words, in 'Master and Commander' they said blood + 'Y' at the end, where as I think that in the 1600's they would not have blasphemed.
yea, swear words ruin 'ANY' film weather brickfilm or live action. End of story

Re: To curse or not to curse...

If it's some action packed cool dude movie with a lot of shootin' then swearing is more than welcome. Most of the times swearing is not needed though.

Re: To curse or not to curse...

I disagree

Or at least put a warning on before the movie many a time I have watched and there was a f bomb mini/eek

Re: To curse or not to curse...

Don't use language in your brick films. Kid's make up most of your viewers. They don't want to hear swearing and neither do I. mini/no
