Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Everything in 2012 was bad. Except for special effects, but CGI spectacles are boring IMO

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I hated the CGI.  It sucked really bad and some how they didn't research the time very well.  The 2012 Olympic Games in London are not going to be played during late December...  mini/confused

I guess everything sucked about it then.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I thought the CGI was the best part about the movie. mini/tongue

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I rather enjoyed it, mainly because I didn't take it too seriously as the facts were all over the place. The CGI I thought was pretty good (though nothing compared to the epicness of Smeagol's [/flattery]), though the plot... well. Those who have seen it can fill in the blank.

I don't make Brickfilms. I trade virtual hats.

Avatar

I still hate it. I never thought something could actually get worse the more I watch it. Its so bad I cant actually be bothered to rant. To straight up rant would be pointless as I will no doubt just repeat all I have said earlier.

Don't think this movie has defeated me. I still have a burning hatred for it more intense than forges of Isengard, but I've said all I could. This movie has drained enough money to save Japan (and no - that's not meant to be a joke) and still have enough left over to cure Africa of poverty. The fact it still tries to make money via Director cuts and extended editions is the most shameless thing Hollywood has ever done, and shows everything I hate about the system.

'Avatar' is not a movie. Its a hoover that drains your money. Its a big shiny thing that exists to sell. Its a product. Nothing more. Screw you Cameron - screw you. I cannot believe you still think this is your masterpiece....

I still don't see why you hate Avatar so much. And since you've felt the need to rant so much about it on here, why the hell would you watch it again?

Them trying to get more money with the bonuses and sequels is shameful, I admit though

World's Greatest Dad

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

How can you plan a 3rd film when you haven't even made the second? This is madness. A ploy to drum up more money.

Persist.

Happens all the time. Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Sin City (lol), The Matrix, etc.

...Harry Potter...

According to JK Rowling, the story to Harry Potter 'strolled into [her] head fully formed'. She knew the ending before the start. If you're meaning the movies, well, they had a story to go on already, so they could plan a third. But to the others, I agree.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Yes, but if you have no text where it says 'make another movie because the story obviously isn't finished', then you shouldn't make another one. Harry Potter and possibly Star Wars almost needed their films. If they didn't make them their stories would be unfinished. We could've done without the prequels of star wars, but Harry Potter needed them. I'm just saying that Avatar is getting on my nerves. Yes, it was revolutionary, yes, it had amazing visual effects, but that doesn't give it the right to make another movie for the sole purpose of gaining money and get away with it. It really doesn't need a sequel.

Persist.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

It is not revolutionary at all.

The visual effects, I meant. Or the process, anyways. Im definitely not defending it, however.

Persist.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The visual  effects, I guess. But IMO these visual effects and CGI explosions are just boring. 'Amazing' visual effects and a boring, cliché, TOTALLY predictable storyline is a bad movie. Give me something minimalistic with a great story any day. (Reservoir Dogs, Dead Man, and so many others).

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Yes, the visual effects were the best I've ever seen for a film creating a world from the ground-up.

I watched Avatar in the theatre 3 times just because it was very entertaining. I'm not a film snob so I enjoyed the simple story and eye-candy. It was a movie that immersed myself in the fictional world and I liked it.

Since you seem so annoyed with my rants (which I understand entirely, hence why I refused to break into a complete rant earlier), I assume you have seen and read them. I think I have said almost everything I can about why I hate it. If you disagree with my criticisms, fine, but I have clearly said why I hate it.

I understand the concept of 'guilty pleasure' or 'entertaining'. My favourite movie of all time is 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves', which has almost everything I hate in movies (apart from CGI) - bland romance, forced political messages, a horrible original pop song, a simplistic plot that does not surprise, unnecessary 'epic' action that isn't really as epic as the movie thinks it is, Americans as good guys/English as bad guys, Americans trying to act like Englishmen, and a cat jump scare. Yet, its so entertaining because it also has everything I love - cheesy villains, swashbuckling, knights, swords, a huge pastoral scope, adventure and an epic orchestral score.

Heck, I like 'Mamma Mia'. It has catchy tunes from an underrated band, excellent cinematography and editing, good acting, and it never takes itself seriously. Clearly every actor enjoyed working on it - and that fun comes through. Yes, my credibility has been flushed down the toilet...

I also understand why people may find the atmosphere immersive. But I just didn't. In my opinion it still looked like CGI and everything still moved like CGI. And I didn't get into it because the characters were like cardboard cut-outs, the story was so un-inspired and predictable (I excuse basic plots as long as its aware its basic and doesn't pretend its more complex), and the script was completely lacking in suspense and emotion. The scenery is a backdrop. It adds to the movie in such films as 'Blade Runner', but that's because there is a brilliantly structured script and engaging performances in the foreground. But that's just all my opinion.

Oh, and the world of Pandora has always looked exactly like 'Felucia' from Star Wars Episode 3 (and the Star Wars games). Bear in mind Episode 3 was released in 2005 and was in production for around two years beforehand - with most likely the art department doing designs even before then, as Lucas liked to work with the art department before he even finished scripting (which is pretty logical as he can build the script around the environment)

And since you've felt the need to rant so much about it on here, why the hell would you watch it again?

Quite often, I hate a movie the first - and sometimes second time I see it, but it eventually grows on my. I hated Indiana Jones 4 when it came out, for all the reasons everyone else has said. But it was only after watching it several times - once directly after watching the third instalment, when I realised that its actually an OK movie. Sure, its not nearly as good as the trilogy, and its completely unnecessary - but it could have been much more shameful. It actually bothers to pay homage to the original trilogy, and has some pretty cool moments (I loved the killer ants sequence).

The same went with Star Wars Episode 3. At first I disregarded it, as its part of the prequels and any 'nerd' is required to hate the prequels. But actually...its a pretty good sci-fi movie. It has some incredible action set-pieces that I look forward to seeing in 3D, and whilst the dialogue is still pretty bad, the whole thing is nicely paced and kept me interested...even in suspense.

And every time I've watched 'Avatar', I've tried my hardest to clear my mind and immerse myself. But...I just cant. I'm glad you like it, I'm glad there is one less cynical person in the world - if anyone else is able to enjoy it, your a far better person than I.

Yes, referring to the films. The success of a book doesn't always equal the success of a film (Eragon, anyone?)
