Topic: 2D Star Wars Fan Film (original, I know.)

Okay, I don't know if many of you know this, but after I left BiM, I became a dedicated 2D animator. Given that I've only been doing it for about a year now, obviously I still have room to improve, but I'd really like to create a full-length short film. (oxymoron?). I know what you're thinking; 'Come on, MOL, be original, you're better than this.' My goal isn't to be original when creating this film, it's to make an entertaining, deep, emotional story which grabs and hurls the viewer's attention across the room. In other words, I want a good storyline, and film itself. Of course I want it to be original, but, again, it's not my main goal. I realize I'll be critiqued for this, and am wondering if this community has any ideas on how to create an original atmosphere for a Star Wars film. I've started a script, but still, I want to know how I could make something slightly original, but still hit the viewer in the chest.

Thank you very much for any support, critique, or ideas.

Cheers,

Well, and this should be obvious, work in an era and location that aren't well know to the Star Wars galaxy. Stay away from places like Coruscant, Tatooine, Naboo, etc. Create your own characters and causes that will be stories you can get across to the viewer. Stay away from Jedi and Sith. I have nothing against using Jedi and Sith, but if you want an emotional attachment I don't think they will work. They are more for a "ZOMG! AWESOME!" type of effect then deep emotional attachments. Once you add them into a fan production... it doesn't work so well.

Look at Star Wars material that you have found yourself interested in and go off of that a little. Taking the elements from it that you like. Starfighters, smugglers, bounty hunters, janitors, whatever! mini/lol

Yes, I knew you'd reply, James mini/smile

I'm planning on doing it around the same time period The Old Republic was at it's peak. (Around 1000 BBY). I'm going for consistency, but I'd like to make my own characters. I am going to make the main antagonist a Sith Apprentice. No matter what Star Wars film you're making, you always need a badass. mini/tongue I wan't people to despise him, yet think he's awesome.

Planning on making the main character, however, a bounty hunter with..troubles with 'the exchange', to say the least, and is being hunted by them. Yes, this film is going to be slightly inspired by KotOR1 and 2. What with the exchange, the old republic, and bounty hunters.

Also, the planet is going to be from the star wars eu, but I'm unsure of any planets that are very industrial. If you have an idea for one that would be good. Other than that Imma search the wiki, like, a lot. mini/smile

EDIT: Maybe Esseles?

1,000 BBY is the exact time of the Battle of Ruusan and the rise of Darth Bane/the inception of the rule of two. You'd have to keep that in mind if you wanted to keep it out of any continuity problems and have a Sith.

Then again, the Clone Wars just killed a Jedi who, in another book, had survived Order 66. So... you don't HAVE to worry about continuity.

I'll browse through the Star Wars Atlas later today and give you a few names of planets.

Re: 2D Star Wars Fan Film (original, I know.)

Since I am unfortunately a Star Wars geek myself, I have two concerns for you. If you want to deal with the Exchange, you might want to set it around the time they were most notorious, (EDIT: around 4,000 BBY). By 1,000 BBY they would be running only small jobs since it's power would have been diminished after the Hutts challenged them. If you do set it in 1,000 BBY, you can use that the bounty hunter is thinking of leaking information and that's why they are hunting him, because that is more the type of mission they would run around that time.

My second issue is with the bounty hunter. Since it seems you are choosing to use that profession, I would stay away from Mandalorians and Rodians as they have become the cliché bounty hunters. We can thank the Fetts and Greedo for that. Human is okay because of the vast diversity within that species, but even then if you could find a relatively unheard of species, that would be great. One species to consider is Arkanian as they enjoy enhancing their abilities through cybernetics. Anyway, I've embarrassed myself enough. Hope this project works out for you.

Okay, another Star Wars geek is me. However, I have very simple advice: stay away from characters that most people know (movie characters mostly), and events that happened. If you need to retell an event (say Order 66) tell it in another perspective of another person.

I would recommend you stay in one general local area, I know Star Wars has a galaxy, but limit it to one to two planets and make each very detailed- the atmosphere, ambience and general look of everything. (Was this going to be LEGO or another type of animation- i'm not sure what 2D qualifies as... in my mind...)

Overall, make it simple yet detailed, in a sense. Not too broad of a setting, just enough characters to tell the story, not too much that we lose track of who is who. Strengthen set design and visual effects, stay away from over complicated INCEPTION type storylines.

I'm looking forward to this, be sure to post a link in this thread when you finish it!
