Hi there,
I'm just starting out with stop motion and would really appreciate any recommendations for the right camera to buy.
What are the main things I should look for when choosing a camera? Is a regular webcam OK or should I go for one with more features?
What features would be cool to have?

The Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000. It has high quality, manual focus and easy to use.

Welcome to Bricks In Motion! If you haven't already, I suggest you read the Beginners Guide to Bricks In Motion. Now onto your situation. The Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 is one of the best types of cameras/webcams for beginners and pros. Most members on this site use that (And so did I) It has great controls and features. One situation you might fall into is that the newer version [of the software] doesn't have white balance anymore, so I suggest downloading an older software version. Here is a great thread dedicated to finding the right webcam if you're not satisfied with the Quickcam pro 9000.
As you progress in animation skills, you might want to update to a better type of camera. That can be tricky, because not all cameras have live feed, such as webcams, which allows them to be opened up in a frame capturing program (recommended: helium frog or monkey jam). And I was one of those that have bought a camera without live feed to the computer... So I suggest you start off with logitech quickcam pro 9000. You can find it for about $70.00 USD, or maybe even $60.00 USD. Though I highly suggest that you study the camera you want later on once you don't want the webcam anymore (which I highly doubt since it's so good)

Manual focus is an absolute requirement for brickfilming. In addition to making some types of shots impossible, auto-focus cameras have a penchant for changing focus in the middle of shooting, assuring that the results will be rubbish unless you're able to coax it into going back the way it was.

The Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 is an old model. Better watch out for the Logitech C910
