I recently got Gimp, which is supposedly a free version of Adobe Photoshop. But every time I look at a picture that was edited in Adobe Photoshop, it looks amazing. Is there really that big of a difference in Gimp and Photoshop? Which is better and which should I have?

In my opinion, Gimp and Photoshop fufill the main filming purposes, such as maskng and lightsabers. If you want to make all cool other stuff, use Photoshop. I don't have Photoshop, but I know it's better than Gimp, which I have. For begginers, use Gimp to start out. Then, as you get better, move up to Photoshop.
also, there can be some cool stuff made in GIMP as well. you just have to know what you're doing.
Well gimp has limeted tools and other performance that is limited, but photoshop is like a endless pit of possible things you can do to a picture. Photoshop is better (I have it) and I have used it for MANY of my animations, so yah, in my opinion photoshop is better...hope this helped.
gimp is simple and you can get to know it, i have photoshop and it adds color to the picture much much better than in gimp. I suggest using gimp before you buy photoshop 
Okay, so I have Photoshop (it is amazing) and from what I hear, Gimp is good to. Here's my stand: Gimp is easy to use, and can be used for doing masking, simple effects, etc. for brickfilms. Photoshop, however, has an even wider range of possibilities for use other than brickfilming.
So if you are interested in graphic design, and want to use a program for more reasons than just brickfilming, go for Photoshop.
Both programs require skill. Other people can make amazing things, but it all depends on what you can do. If you've got the skill, or think you can be patient enough to acquire it, go for Photoshop. If you don't have any skill, or you have skill but no money, get Gimp. Both can do the same thing.

Is there a big difference between Photoshop and gimp?
Yes, big. I own Photoshop and I have gimp..Photoshop can do almost 10 times more than gimp.
I find GIMP to be more intuitive than Photoshop, especially when attempting to draw shapes. I never could have drawn my subway map using Photoshop.
my answer to you would be stick with Gimp for a while, experiment with it, do some tutorials and then decide if you really need the features of photoshop

Remember Try it Before you Go waste your money on a program you dont even know about

Photoshop=Big Cost
Bottom line, GIMP is a powerful photo editor which although it's features are slightly limited it can do quite a bit, Photoshop if you have the money is of course better. However if you want to use it everyonce and a while, GIMP would be fine.
