I can't find that button. I use Vista.

It's on your keyboard. I don't think your system matters. On my computer it's located in the upper right.
Get an on screen keyboard and try it.

GeekTool. You can google the codes to bring up weather and date and sunrise/sunset times. Stuff like that.

How did you get your icons to look like that?
You can customise app icons manually, but the easiest way is with Candybar.
