I know this is a bit of a bump, but not all cameras focus shallowly, you can have a large depth of field on a quite a few cameras.

However, in most cases, there's going to be some DOF in such a big scene. Plus, why would you not want DOF for this picture? It would make it look even nicer than it already is.

Exactly what I was going to say.  There is no such thing as an unlimited depth of field,  There will always be one for real cameras, so adding one, even a big one, will make that picture look much better.

Your eye is in essence a camera. I don't know about you but I can focus for as far as I can see. So an unlimited DoF camera would be possible mini/smile

No. I hate to break it to you, but you most definitely can't focus as far as you can see. Your eye is a lot like a camera, but it doesn't work at all like that Cartoonkid. I am 100% sure that you can't focus with everything in literally perfect detail using your eyes. And the mechanics of a camera make it inevitable that you have a DOF. It's not physically possible to make a camera without DOF.

And even if you could somehow magically have perfect focus with a camera, DOF is a must-have in a large CGI scene.

Re: The CGI Thread

Well with a lot of pictures and a gracious amount of post pro, a pic mimicking unlimited focus would be possible, but lets stop this.

I am doing a 52 week CGI trek.  I aim to get much, much better and actually learn how to use blender.  Week one is a bit late, but released today on my blog.  Really didn't like how this turned out, but the P took longer to mesh than I thought, so it was a tad rushed.
I will only be putting some of the models in this thread so as not to clutter so if you want to keep up with my endeavours I suggest following my blog.

Re: The CGI Thread

Stan the lego man could i suggest not having motion blur on the train, but on the environment? This would make it look like the camera is tracking the train and draw attention to it.

Awsome car, roRyL!

Re: The CGI Thread

The arms and the hands look a bit strange, but apart from that the fig is nicely modeled, and well animated.

yeah, i'd say the arms and hands look a little funny.  other than that, though, it looks great.  you might want to check out my blender minifigure that i modeled.  you can use it for whatever you want (you don't have to credit me mini/wink )

Re: The CGI Thread

How do you export a blender animation? I've been trying to figure it out for weeks.

Re: The CGI Thread

In the output panel, select what drive and folder you want your animation to go into, as well as change the render settings to a ".avi" type. Then render out your animation.

Re: The CGI Thread

Has anyone gotten the smoke in Blender 2.56 working, and by that, I mean rendered. I've gone and followed this tutorial, and the most I can get is a very small cloud of black pixels some distance from my flow object.

It looks great in the 3D view, though. Besides not rendering, it's working 100%.

Re: The CGI Thread

That tutorial used blender 2.50, there have been a lot of changes and improvements since.  this one is much more updated.

Here's the body and legs of a LEGO minfigure I modeled yesterday.

I may resize the waist today when I model the hands and arms. Also, I did NOT steal, or modify, or use Littlebick's minifigure. One difference is, his is much better than mine mini/tongue .

Re: The CGI Thread

Okie-dokie, I've followed the more recent tutorial for setting up smoke in Blender, and it still isn't rendering. I get to the point where you apply the Voxel Data texture, and nothing works after that; when I apply the Voxel Data texture, nothing appears in the texture preview window, and nothing renders. Apparently, I'm not the only person having this problem.

EDIT: Actually, it seems to work. The voxel data texture preview still doesn't show up, but it seems to be rending fine. I'm trying a high-res render now. However, this is from a file I got online; I haven't been able to get one of my own files working just yet.

Re: The CGI Thread

Here's a frame from a CGI backdrop I'm working on. It's about... 50% done.
