Topic: Problems with Masking

Ok, so I have successfully masked my image in GIMP.  I am now ready to export. I export the image back onto my destop (export as PNG) and from there drag it back into iStopmotion home.  But when the image appears in iStopmotion alongside my other footage, the saturation of the masked image is messed WAY up.  The colors (and i think quality) have been completely jacked up. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?  Can anybody help me?

Also, if there is an alternative to masking in GIMP, please suggest it. THNX!

Re: Problems with Masking

I've never used iStopmotion so I haven't encountered this problem before. I use Bafran which is a very good program for masking and lets you export the frames as an .avi(which is a bonus for me) or just indiviual frames. I recommend it, hope this helps.

Edit: Not sure if this program works on Mac, sorry.

Re: Problems with Masking

I didn't have this issue so far in iStopmotion(Pro though). Maybe you could try not to drag and drop the image but to really import it (sth. like Movie->Import pictures->from volume). You could also try out different file formats for the image. I usually do it like this: right click (in iStopmotion) on the frame you want to edit -> Edit with ...
You can change the program for editing in the settings.

hope that helped.

And Bafran doesn't work for Mac.

You can't use Heluim Frog for masking. Although it's a great program for frame capture, you can't use it for rotoscoping or anything of the like. I'd suggest downloading Gimp or Bafran, and if you have the money, get After Effects or Photoshop.

Re: Problems with Masking

Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately I am still unable to mask my images properly. I am completely befuddled. I use iStopmotion home, that may be the problem. I also may be saving my pics i mask in GIMP as low quality .jpgs and not high quality jpgs. I dont know. I would GREATLY appreciate it if one of you made a video on how you export your images out of iStopmotion, import them into GIMP, export from GIMP, and then re-import back into iStopmotion. Whoever is up to the challenge i will give 20 SUBS, I promise! If you do not know how to record your computer screen, check out www.screentoaster.com--its really easy mini/smile THanks again!

Re: Problems with Masking

I'd try High Quality Jpeg's and not png's. Most likely because png's are compressed, and most camera/frame capture programs defaultly take jpg photos (unless you change the settings). Because If you take a jpg from istopmotion, export, import to gimp, save as png, It's most likely not going to look the same. So your best bet is high quality jpg (around 85 - 95%). Best of luck,

Re: Problems with Masking

I use Photoshop and PNG is the best...  However JPEG compresses it.
