I realise that I/we are probably hopelessly outdated! But I just received a lego studios set for my son, and he is eager to get started. My problem is that the enclosed software is for windows 98 and my computer runs on Windows7, which makes the lego studios software incompatible. Does any of you experts have a suggestion/ solution. Mind you , he is 6 years old, so we are currently not looking into excessive and sophisticated filmmaking!

Congratulations to your son. I always wanted that set as a child. 
In windows 7, you should be able to install the software, then right click on its application icon and select "properties". Once this window comes up, hit the "compatibility" tab and select "windows 98/windows me" from the drop down. I can't vouch for that particular piece of software, but compatibility mode usually does the trick for me.
If this doesn't work, you could look at some free and simple stop motion animation software such as "monkeyjam". If the enclosed Lego camera is recognised as a webcam, the software may let you use it in the place of Lego's provided software. I can't guarantee anything though as I don't have the hardware or software to experiment with.
