Topic: My Two Big Problems with Stop Motion (in general)

Hi, everyone.

So, I've animated a few things, turned out pretty nice, actually. Not just LEGOs, too. Anyways, I always had two issues that are crucial to a successful 'shoot' and, eventually, film, and that always come to me in production.

The first one is the basic one.
How should I efficiently tape down a set, make it immovable? I find myself having the set too movable (read: few millimeters). Also, should I constantly be moving my set to get different angles? Because I can't always shift my light sources from one end to the other.

Which leads me to the second question.
How can I get more dynamic shots (close-ups, from below the characters, etc....) without having to move the entire set? Because my tripod only moves vertically, not horizontally, so my camera can't be over the set, if you can understand.

All input is, as of now, incredibly appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

Well, for set security, use clay or blue tack. That's what we use (clay). For cinematic shots, try using corner angles for more diversity, yes you will have to move your set. Also, close ups are good for cinematic shots. You should also try to work on set building and lighting to pull off a truly beautiful shot.

My lighting and set-building work just fine. The problem I find when shooting is that I don't know how to achieve the photography I want to get because of those two elements.

Well like we said, you don't need to be constantly moving your set, but when you want to change the angle, you're going to have to move your set.

can you rotate the camera?

Re: My Two Big Problems with Stop Motion (in general)

What, pivot on the tripod axis? I can do that, yeah.
I just can't do more dynamic shots because I don't know how to get on top of the set. Like a little bridge for the camera.

Get a new tripod?..

build a custom stand out of legos perhaps?

That's what I do, then I just move the camera around while the baseplate is taped down on all 4 corners. Works beautifully. Having a lego cradle for you cam also makes dolly and pan shots so much easier.

Re: My Two Big Problems with Stop Motion (in general)

Perhaps you detached your camera from the tripod?  OMG, has anyone ever done that before?! mini/tongue

With any project, planning needs to be done ahead of time.  You do blocking with your actors, human, animal or figurines.  You have your shots all planned out ahead of time so you know where you camera is going to be in the set and have your set built to accommodate that.

They didn't dig up a trench for Frank Oz to move Yoda around, they raised the set.

I'm pretty sure some Aardman sets are built in sections so you can take out areas for the camera to occupy.

And we've solved your movable set problem so you really only have one element to worry about and it's been answered.  Now go animate.

If I were to detach the camera from the tripod how would I maintain any sort of stability between pictures, dude?
Building the set in parts can be tricky but seems like the easiest solution.

The tripod is just like any other tripod, no point in replacing it. Finding new parts, however... I'll do some digging to see if I can find horizontal-extensions for the tripod-head.

I find that plasticine does not work when it comes to securing sets. It melts and is too soft to start with. Blu-tack is much better.

Can't your camera use remote capture?

If your camera doesn't support PTP(picture transfer protocol)/remote picture taking, use delayed picture taking to reduce bumping/shaking.

Re: My Two Big Problems with Stop Motion (in general)

What you guys suggested is that I took the camera off of the tripod. What I am asking is how would I secure it, then? Make it levitate in the air? If I hold it manually, there'll be no consistency between pictures.

Refer back to our answer to your first problem: Tac.  It may not go by that name locally (for me, it's called Sticky tac), so just look for any malleable, reuseable adhesive at your local office supply store.

Come on, we're LEGO animators here.  Creativity and ingenuity is a given if we play with LEGO.

Get a tripod with a ball/socket joint.
