Topic: London or Dublin?

I need some opinions about something. I am filming a detective movie that is based in the late 1800s. I need someone's opinion on whether it should be based in London or Dublin. I'm unsure about London because the whole Sherlock Holmes and running the risk of sounding cliche`. And also because the two main protagonists are Irish. I'm unsure about Dublin because I don't know if it was advanced enough in the late 1800s to be considered a good main city. Which city should I choose?

Ok. My next question is: My two main characters are both Irish. One is a detective with the ability to make deductions. He is fairly bright and smokes a pipe. His assistant is an old cab (horse cab) driver who has joined in with him. Does this sound to close to Sherlock Holmes to be considered cliche`?

Question Answer #1: Neither Dublin or London, go for Vienna, Austria or Paris, France.

And for the characters, make the main one a former soldier and the assistant a former prostitute who ocassionally infiltrates the countries royal court.

The prostitute can be the seducer, she tricks men and lures them into traps set up by the detective.

Your original idea sounds fine, Eddie. Cliche can be fun if you look at it from a fresh perspective.

Disturbing? Ease off, people are allowed to give opinions and ideas. Wow, he mentioned a prostitute, run for cover, the sky is falling. There's no way anybody can handle anything that adult.
I for one thought it was a pretty good idea, and although I agree with Jargon, to be honest I liked it better than Eddie's, because they both seem like really different, interesting characters who each have their own ways of getting information (deduction/seduction). It would make for a great film.

This is just my opinion, though. Eddie, choose whatever one you like the best.

The city really depends on the mood you want to create I guess. And since when is a prostitute disturbing? I don't know what fairytale you live in.

Ok. I'm using a seducer a few times in the movie. Only he's a male. He does trick people though. And I am seriously considering the detective calling in the help of one of his friends who is a female seducer. Thanks guys! mini/smile

Absolutely.

Kinzcove mentioned other cities, that's something that's worth thinking about. I do like the Dublin idea and would try to steer away from clichéing to much, you know?

There's a slight interest on the whole detective job being a double-life, kind of. Like 'Sherlock' would be, in reality, an accountant, or shoe-maker, something like that.
