Topic: Coming up with good stories.

Hi, at the moment I'm having trouble thinking up good story ideas and I was wondering what would be a way to come up with good ones. I hope someone can help me out. Thanks

Re: Coming up with good stories.

Ever looked in the story ideas thread? Its the only sticky topic in the Preproduction thread.

Re: Coming up with good stories.

Well, for my stories, I usually get good ideas when taking a hot shower or bouncing a ball.

Re: Coming up with good stories.

I get most of my ideas in school. mini/blankexpression                   no joke, all my videos come to me during the very first class (history), and i just ignore the teacher and right down a basic idea for my story, lol. though i wonder why it's my best class... Anyways, look at my video i'm making. It's called the first thanksgiving. and if you read about it here, you can see that it is some-what true to what actually happened. geuss where i got the idea for that video? history class- when we were learning how the separatists (pilgrims) had the first thanksgiving.
So i sorta am thankful for having school. it gives me time to think- unlike my house where i'm all fussed up with animating, scripting, homework, and chores. school is like a vacation.
So all you have to do is find a spot that fits you. it could bee a store, and yout inspiration could be the jelly. It could be a zoo, and your inspiration could be a pile of monkey dung.
so this is how i come up with ideas, and i hope it helped you. Once you have found your spot, don't mind telling me about it because i'd love to hear all the strange and extraordinary spots where animators get their ideas.

Re: Coming up with good stories.

I get my ideas at random times.

Just yesterday I got an idea by watching some rubbish TV programme that my mum had on.

Re: Coming up with good stories.

If you've got time to spare read a book about making short films.:P
Anyone planning to comment on what i just said should read the first part!!

Re: Coming up with good stories.

That's actually a very good idea. Studying your craft can certainly help you improve.

Re: Coming up with good stories.

Go on the internet and search "Short story" then find a good site and read a few. Also, read a lot of books, and aim for the classics. Those are idea fuel.

Re: Coming up with good stories.

Just tutoring yourself about the structure of a screenplay can deliver some good ideas.

Re: Coming up with good stories.

Hot showers are always good for thinking up stories, or really even just thinking generally. It's actually scientifically proven. Something about the supply of oxygen to your brain or whatever.
Anyway, one other thing would be to ask yourself "what don't I ever see in a brickfilm"? That's how I got the idea for [shameless plug]The Great Outdoors[/shameless plug]. I just thought about how you never see brickfilms made outdoors nowadays.

Re: Coming up with good stories.

When I'm stumped for an idea, I usually go and make characters with my minifigures, which then leads to scripts, etc. Sometimes random ideas will pop into my head.
