Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

I was thinking in my mind that the person would get the gift, stop in the middle, and open the box, then shut the box again (re-wrap it, maybe?) and bring it to the next person. The camera could stop at each house for a little while too.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

I like that idea BG.  There would be a problem though.  As the package goes from room to room (house to house), each animator would have slightly different camera angles and lighting.  This film couldn't done as one continuous shot.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

Perhaps it would work for 3 or 4 segments animated by the same person.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

Hmm...depending on the music, it might work for when the music transitions (forgive my music-impaired vocabulary) from one section to another.

Instead of a room to room dolly shot, I was thinking a single room dolly shot of multiple rooms in multiple scenes, all at the same pace (for example 0.5 studs per second).  Jargon's solution would still apply here, though.

I can't think of a good visual example at the moment, but take Scrubs title sequence as a jumping off point.  It intercuts among the castmembers, but in our case, it intercuts among rooms and character reactions.

Alternatively, taking both ideas, we could still have a room by room transfer of the gift and just use a digital pan (along with some post-production blending) to transition from room to room.

I'm going to say that this room-to-room dolly/pan sequence will be optional.  If someone wants tackle it, great, if not, no harm done.

vegas: Looks acceptable.  If you're able to submit to something by the holidays, excellent, if not, no big deal.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

I think I might try the dolly shot thingy and see how it turns out. If it's bad, then we won't use it, and I'll try the camera movement/blending in After Effects, and if that still doesn't turn out, I'll probably drop the idea.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

I can do both so Il have a tackle at it. Aswell what are we going to do about the minifigs and stuff, because some people might not have the right parts?

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

Well that's the best part of this project, except for the mandatory sequence scenes, each person's scene will be independent of everyone else and the key piece is the tan 1x4 tile with sock texture, and people can substitute the sock tile with a plain tan 1x2 tile.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

So you have to have a sock in your video?

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

The present being regifted is a sock but you don't have to show it in the shot if you don't want to or can't, since it's supposed to be in the gift box's perspective.

For example, you can shoot a gift being opened, recipient looks in side and reacts without ever seeing the sock in your shot.  You can also shoot it with the recipient taking the sock out (now in view of the camera) and reacting to it.  Ultimately, we get the idea once it is all piece together.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

Okay, so if all the animators can share their scene plans, we can get this project started.  Still looking into music that works with the montage.  I might try asking Kevin MacLeod to compose but there's no guarantee of that working out.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

My scene plans are trying that dolly shot I was talking about, and also doing a regular pass from one person to the next.

I think we should set up a chart of who's doing what person passing to what person though, so that the minifigures can be the same.

Well, I'm not sure if I made it clear, but only the opening sequence with characters A, B, C and maybe D need to be linked, the rest can be independent (aside from the dolly and/or passing shots).  This way, it allows dynamic editing for the music montage.

Essentially, a list is all we need and I've made a separate list for linked scene sequences..

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

I'm not so hot on thinking of ideas so if anyone is willing to give me one, let me know mini/bigsmile  Otherwise I'll have to resort to my own little brain.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

All right, I'll compile some ideas but I can't be the only one with ideas here, mkay.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

Some ideas (these have already been added to the first post)

  • Teenager expected to get an Xbox, got a sock instead.  Reacts.

  • Birthday girl gets a sock.  Tries to light it on fire over the birthday cake.

  • A priest, a minister and a rabbi at a bar.

  • Kid unwraps a gift and starts to cry.

  • Dog and human play tug-o-war over sock.

  • Violent argument between husband and wife on their anniversary

  • Jewish kid getting socks for all 8 days, one of those days he gets something different by mistake and its swapped back for the sock.

  • Workplace Secret Santa (I'm not kidding this actually happened: My Secret Santa recipient just wanted socks.

  • Baby shower

  • Wedding gifts

  • Man receives gifts and has an attitude about the giver's stinginess

Take your own life experience and exaggerate the parts where you got a disappointing gift.

Re: Holiday Montage Collaboration - No deadline, we'll play it by ear

Thanks for the good ideas mini/bigsmile  I was focusing on the present being a Christmas gift but silly me finally understands mini/lol  I can probably come up with something.

Also, I encourage others to start thinking of ideas, Christmas will be here before we know it.
