Steven Spielberg does an excellent job of stretching a short science fiction story into a 70-minute long film! This film was All I expected of it and more!

The Social Network

Not much I can say that wouldn't be too obvious. It's a beautiful movie - every shot has had thought put into its framing. The dialogue is so well written and just clever. Zuckerberg could so easily have been a stereotype nerd, but they fleshed him out and gave him so much depth. It leaves you behind a little when Facebook moves from a house to a funky office without anyone mentioning it], but I can't believe they made a movie about lawsuits and computer programming this completely engrossing.

Very original, I liked it a lot. It had great visuals, and the soundtrack composed by Phillip Glass really helped the movie.

Ha, I just finished reading Runaway Horses yesterday (the one about the military plot).

How did you like it? I've been searching for a copy of The Temple of the Golden Pavilion.

Forgot to post:
I went to the film festival in Gent on tuesday and saw:

Bodyguards & Assassins
Good movie, I really liked some of the characters. I noticed before I saw the movie a lot of people complained about having few action in the movie, but I thought it had some pretty kick-ass stuff.

American Grindhouse
Awesome documentary, it was really playful, funny, and above all interesting. Anyone who's into Exploitation cinema really needs to see this mini/yes

Really strange & interesting writer. Runaway Horses is the second part in a tetralogy called The Sea of Fertility; you should read Spring Snow, the first part.

Y tu mamá también

A very raw and realistic examination of sexuality. But beneath that, the movie is also about lies and secrets, and the consequences of revealing the truth behind them. Very good.

The Royal Tenenbaums

Not bad. Wes Anderson's deadpan style sometimes is a but much to stomach, but the film certainly has its merits.

Halloween
Great movie.

Halloween II
Decent, wasn't fond of the use of gore, kinda went against the techniques of the first.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Carrie
Damn, that movie is fantastic. The ending gets better and better each time I watch it. Carrie easily keeps its title as my favorite movie.

One of the most metaphorical, atmospheric, and emotional films I have ever seen. It's masterful cinematography and brilliant performances brings together this film like no other.

While it tries to stay "realistic", it's clear that the film was created with some kind of message to the viewer. Only few could have pulled off such a extravagant masterpiece.

Into the darkness once more. I walk into the unknown. To a far better life than I've ever known.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

That was weird and enjoyable. I like how they handled Heath Ledger's death.

Spoiler (click to read)

I also like how the actors that took over for his character become more unlikeable as his morality became questionable. Johnny Depp was my favorite out of the three, and Jude Law was also favorable. Then Colin Farrell came in, and just looked and acted unlikable.

This film didn't feel predictable at all, and I totally enjoyed that.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Wow, what an amazing Coincidence....

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

Hmmmm....I may need to watch it a second time to get all of it. As usual, Gillam's style is imaginatively weird. It wasn't necessarily pleasant, but I dont think its trying to be. At least I dont think.

There are some things that confused me. The dream world isn't really explained. If fact - not much is explained. For example, how did Dr. Parnassus come by the mirror? Where is his mystical church? Is THAT in the mirror? Because it doesn't look like anything in the real world. How do you get out of the Mirror? In one scene they simply pull the exit out of no-where, yet most people just magically appear out of the Imaginariums stage. Surely if you can pull the exit out of no-where, it would solve a lot of things.

And why is it that Percy NEVER AGES? Is HE immortal? Is he even human?

The ending kinda left me out in the cold. It was too abrupt for my liking, and - although something IS accomplished - I didn't feel like anything was accomplished.

Spoiler (click to read)

Valentina's marriage and family is only mentioned. It should be a happy occasion that shows she got what she wanted and that she is free. But instead the main focus is that Dr. Parnassus looks like a tramp. And what does Percy mean by 'mentally scar her' or whatever he said. What, is seeing her Dad again after she thought he was dead REALLY going to scar her??

Oh, he means the Daughter. Well...surely there is an alternative to living on the streets. I mean, you could meet Valentina in private, Valentina could buy you some new clothes (she looks pretty rich) and THEN you could introduce yourself to your grand daughter. Thats just one alternate to going back on the streets when you have a rich daughter with a family. If anything, its making it worse by going back on the streets.

But I'm bashing this too much. It was a great movie, and as much as I bash the ending, it was incredibly intense and interesting right up until the last 5 mins. But, I would rather have a great movie and 5 minutes that I dont like rather than a bad movie and 5 minutes that I really like any day of the week. Its great to see a film with such imagination in a world devoid of it.

Bob le flambeur

I found the plot to be a little unfocused, especially the sideplot with Anna. Her part of the story felt pretty shoehorned in and didn't have much impact on the story as a whole. The ending was also a bit thematically confusing.

Due Date

Not bad, decently entertaining. The jokes were often a hit or miss, though: sometimes pretty funny, other times a bit uncomfortable to sit through.

Spoiler (click to read)

Also, Jaime Fox's appearance had little to no impact on the film, it might as well have not even happened.

UCLA sometimes gets prerelease screenings of certain movies (I actually saw it Wednesday). Next week, we get 127 Hours, which I'm definitely looking forward to.

NICE.

The Howling

WOW, that was a great werewolf movie. Loved the plot, although the plot twists seemed a bit obvious at times.
Amazing transformations too! I think it might have been better than An American Werewolf In London, although I did like that film very much.

3.5/5

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Hey, that's weird, I was planning on buying An American Werewolf In London tomorrow. I love waatching werewolf transformations that were done with 80's/90's special effects technology. CGI always feels kinda meh.

Army of Darkness
I love this movie so damn much.
