Topic: The Canon 60D
With the new Canon 60D planned to ship in September (in the States [I don't know when for other countries]) How does it compare with other cameras such as the 5D, 7D, or the T2i (550D)?
When it comes to shooting video with DSLRs, Canon is the first place to look, so I'm not deciding between this or a Nikon. So I'm mainly asking what people have seen that really differs this from the 7D and the 550D besides price.
I've seen that there isn't much difference in the video quality between the 550D and 7D, when it comes to HDSLR film making the only this is controls and placement of controls. One main thing I've seen with functionality is that the 7D can adjust white balance based on color temperature (I think) whereas the 550D has limited white balance presets (I know). From what I've read on B&H and the Canon website is that is does have custom color temp white balance.
All three cameras have APS-C CMOS sensors so there's no difference in the crop factor. The 60D and 550D are 18 megapixels and the 7D is 19. But to me that doesn't matter all that much considering I'm not going to need a 5184x3456 picture for Internet video
.
On to shutter speed and ISO, The 7D and 60D have a shutter speed of 1/8000 to 30 sec and the 550D has 1/4000 to 30 sec, but that doesn't really apply to me too much since I'll mainly be using it for film work. And when I did some stop-motion work with the DSLRs at Maine Media I stayed with a fairly slow shutter speed to mostly reduce light flicker. But that still is another thing to consider. All three cameras have an ISO of 100-6400 and are expandable to 12800, so no need to debate there.
They all have the same frame rates, so the only other major variables are button placement, weight/size and the cost.
The 60D and the 7D have same the same placement and the screen near the shutter release (which I really like), the 550D is a bit different without the other screen, which makes changing some settings a little more annoying. The change in placement reduces the size of the 550D, which is nice, but I personally like a camera that is a little larger and beefier.
There is also a fair difference in the cost, by a few hundred dollars. For the body it's about $800-550D, $1,100-60D, $1,500-7D.
From what I've read and seen, I really like the 60D. Simply because it's sort of a mix of the 7D and the 550D, with the layout of the 7D. And the 60D has a swivelling LCD screen!
What do you guys think about the new 60D? Which do you perfer? And how well do you think the 60D will work for both film and stop-motion? Will it be worth the couple week wait for the 60D?
