hehe I normally put like all the Lego bricks in one plates in one and tile in another and so on. works well till I use them, lol.

All in a big box, minifigs and small bits in little bags.

Mine are organised into catogries.
In fact, if you look at my avater, you can see some small drawers in the right background with white and orange paper on them.
Thats where I store some of my lego.

I have sorted out my bricks in a boxes by color

I dont lol i'm a messy brickfilmer 
I sort mine by size and shape. I have the basic bricks in one bin, the plates in another, and all of the specialty pieces (vents, control sticks, steering wheels, chairs, et cetera) in bins that I got from Hobby Lobby. Those are really helpful for organising. I also have another bin for all the pieces that make up the minifigures and another for the objects that they can hold (swords, spears, cups, screwdrivers, and whatnot).
This is almost exactly how I sort mine, except if I have a lot of one kind of brick, I'll sometimes sub-divide those by color or groups of colors. When I group colors, I usually do it by "natural" (white, grays, black, brown, green, light blue) and "unnatural" colors (red, blue, yellow, orange) .
I got all my stuff in icecream boxes, sorted by type and size, so I have 4x2 in one box, 2x2 in another etc. , with small pieces in a couple of fishing tackle boxes.
Mine are in boxes, in tubs, all over the floor, on tables and on shelves. It's a huge mess 
I have four drawers, which I sort my minifigure parts into. I am going to sort the bricks by colour eventualy.
I currently use printing trays.
I organize my building bricks by color in tubs.
