I've been reading a lot about the program "Adobe After Affects" and I started to get intrested in using something like that. After I did a quick Google search, I found much to my dismay that the program retailed for $250! That may not seem like a lot to some, but they don't call me 'El Cheapo' for nothing (ok, in reality, they don't, but they should!). Is there an equivalent program I could get for a lower price?

Sort of. After Effects is an incredible program made by Adobe (the Photoshop company) that many professionals use for visual effects. I'm almost positive that there isn't anything that is nearly as good as it for free. But there's some that come close.
DebugMode Wax is the way to go. http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ It's a bit more simple than After Effects, but it gets the job done, and it does it well. Use it for adding effects ONLY. I've tried using it to put clips together, and it can't do that very well at all. Use Windows Movie Maker or Imovie for that.

Thanks! I'm a beginning brickfilmer and as it is now, I don't need some super-ultra-mondo effects editor extrodinar! No, I really just need something that will "get the job done". I'll take a look at this program and let you know if it works. Again thank you.
There is no substitute for After Effects. And where did you find it for $250? The latest version retails at $999. Was that a student price, or a reseller?
If you're looking for something cheaper that can handle basic special effects, you may want to look into Effects Lab Pro. At $150, it can produce excellent effects, but lacks many of the graphics capabilities that AE gives you. If that's still too high a price tag, Wax may be worth a look, though from what I understand it's got quite a learning curve.

I downloaded this and it is so complicated! Any one know how to actually use it? It's really hard to understand!

I'm really hoping you're referring to a demo, and not... something else. And there are a large number of BiM members who use it, myself included.
The vast majority of so-called OEM software is a scam, as it's not really OEM software at all. See this.
Actually I downloaded WAX. It don't do piracy. I know you have to pay for AE so I would defiantly think that is I saw one for free it's piracy. But wax is really difficult. I want to make a cool title for films but I can't figure it out! It looks easy enough to use but I just don't understand it!

Used copies of AE as well as student discounts can be sold with a lower price, but anything else is likely to be pirated.
OK em... I downloaded WAX and i was making a title kind of thing and it said wax has created an illegal operation or something like that. It then closed and up came one of those send don't send things. What just happened?
