Topic: What's it like to be a mod?

What is it like to be a mod, what are some the privileges they get, and how does one become one?

If I was supposed to PM a mod instead, feel free to slap me, but I think it will satisfy some of the curiosity of younger members, as well as my own.
EDIT: I'm not asking to be one, I'm just curious.

Re: What's it like to be a mod?

It's not too exciting.  I choose moderators who have been helpful in identifying problems on the site, and who I know pretty well thus trust to be mature in making decisions.  They also tend to be people who read the forums regularly and are generally among the older members on the site.  They can ban, change their title, and moderate, I guess that's more or less it.  I think it's generally more of an added, not very fun responsibility, but people do it because they like to help the site, and I appreciate that.

We have plenty of moderators right now, btw, so we're not really in the market for more at the moment.

Re: What's it like to be a mod?

There's a special helmet that we receive upon initiation* that lets us enter the internet with physical embodiment (think TRON, but less spandex). Using this, we do hand to hand combat with all manner of vile Troll and Spammer. Many mods have died in the line of duty, but we try not to think about it too much (as death is generally accompanied by rejection of your brain by the helmet, followed by a brainsplosion, which is pretty messy). I would talk more, but the Limo Smeagol bought for me is waiting; I'm about to go to a Mod party and pick up some chicks.

*Initiation is a long, grueling process in which we have to walk in circles for the equivalent of 300 miles, barefoot, naked, in the snow. Our only nourishment is a small crumb of bread dropped in the center of the circle weekly. To get the bread you have to fight off a half starved bear with rabies. Other than that it's pretty easy to get in.

I hope this has been enlightening.

What do the beta testers do? Do they just test the Resources section and give feedback?

Re: What's it like to be a mod?

Being a mod is friggin' awesome. You guys have no idea how many edits we secretly do on your old posts. Seriously, we've edited a few dead threads on camera rigs or software install problems in such a way it reads like a soap opera.

So awesome.

I think most of them don't do anything.  But we them for feedback on contest ideas, etc. from time to time.  And they do have access to the resources section such as it is, for the purpose of providing feedback.

What the...Littlebrick! When did this happen?!

Re: What's it like to be a mod?

I would imagine its a lot of work. I know because I was for quite a while a mod for a popular MMORPG.
