Topic: Youtube HD

We know this sounds like a childish question to ask, but what are the steps you follow when you upload Youtube HD videos?  What resolution do you film at, how do you crop it to widescreen (and when you crop it), and what video format do you use?  Here are the recommendations that Youtube has:

   •MPEG4 (DivX, Xvid, H.264) format
   •1280×720 resolution
   •128k Mono or 320k Stereo MP3/AAC audio
   •24, 25, or 30 frames per second

Do you necessarily follow all these recommendations, and if not, what do you do?

Re: Youtube HD

I use:
WMV as format
1280x720 resolution
I forget what I use for audio.
15 fps

I don't crop my videos, that is the resolution I film in. Hope this info helps.

Re: Youtube HD

Thanks for the info Chuppa.
We have been filming at 640x480, but we are planning on filming at 800x600 from now on and then using VirtualDub to make the film widescreen.  Is that a fairly good setting to film at, and if cropped will Youtube HD work?

Re: Youtube HD

800x600 isn't HD, though YouTube may include a higher quality setting than the default if you upload in that. Most of my HD videos have been filmed at 1600x1200 and then cropped to 1280x544, though the 720p resolution option is still available for these on YouTube. If I were you, I'd film at a much higher resolution even if you don't absolutely need to. HD will be deprecated someday.

Re: Youtube HD

Monkeyjam sucks and doesn't go higher than 800x600.

Re: Youtube HD

It actually can go quite a bit higher, but when it does it gets bigger than our computer screen. mini/sad
Do you think we should upgrade and buy a program such as istopmotion?  If so, what should we get?

Re: Youtube HD

Wait... iStopmotion is for Mac only. (that's why the i is there mini/wink ) I suggest if you have $200 anywhere, get Dragon Stopmotion. Stopmotion Pro has many versions but is pricey and Dragon is wrth your money if wanting HD quality. Of course you can try Helium Frog as it is really good.

Re: Youtube HD

I'd say AnimatorDV+ Simple should be able to handle HD, although don't hold me to that, I've never used it to film HD. It's free, and a good program; lots of extras, pretty stable. I'd at least give it a go and see what you think.

Re: Youtube HD

Thanks a lot Squash!  We're going to have to experiment a bit, but that is what tutorials are for.  Once again, thanks guys! mini/bigsmile

Re: Youtube HD

Wait... If you want your film to LOOK HD you have to have good lighting and a pretty high resolution. If you want Youtube HD just for the heck of it, it just depends on how you export it. A 6 mbps .wmv has got 720p HD on youtube for me. Of course this just exports the video in HD and doesnt really improve the quality.

Re: Youtube HD

OK, we'll have to try both techniques.  Thanks! mini/bigsmile

Actually, I used to use it, and the reason I switched to Helium Frog is because when I exported my movie from AnimatorDV Simple+, even though I filmed in 1200 X 720, it could only go to a max of 740 X 480 pixels or something like that.

Re: Youtube HD

Really?  If that's so, then maybe we should just stick to Monkey Jam.  After all, 800x600 is higher than 740x480 (even if that is widescreen).

Re: Youtube HD

I would suggest you use Helium Frog then, instead of Monkey Jam. Helium Frog allows for HD capturing and it has lots of other good features (i.e. onion skinning and a bunch of that stuff.) But I wouldn't suggest using Helium Frog's chroma keying function. It gives you a pretty sloppy result.

Re: Youtube HD

Helium Frog is not very stable though.
