Topic: Auto smooth? (blender)

Hey, i was wondering what the "auto smooth" button does.  It seems to do exactly the same thing as the edge split modifier...

I don't know, I tried blender but it was so complicated so I use Google Sketchup to make my 3D models. mini/tongue

Wow BrickyBlog, that was extremely helpful.

From the Fine Manual...

The Fine Manual wrote:

The EdgeSplit modifier splits edges within a mesh. The edges to split can be determined from the edge angle (i.e. angle between faces forming this edge), and/or edges marked as sharp.

Splitting an edge affects vertex normal generation at that edge, making the edge appear sharp. Hence, this modifier can be used to achieve the same effect as the Autosmooth button, making edges appear sharp when their angle is above a certain threshold

So yes, the EdgeSplit modifier is another button to do the same thing.

Re: Auto smooth? (blender)

Although the Auto Smooth button sometimes is messed up and doesn't work (though I'm not sure why), so I would recommend the edge split modifier.
