Topic: Logitech's new HD Webcams

I almost wet myself when I saw this news.

Logitech is bringing out four new HD webcams before the end of the year. Here's a quote from the Engadget article.

Engadget wrote:

First let's get the details out of the way. Logitech is announcing four webcams, with the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910 having the longest title and the best specs. It'll record at 1080p, do video chat at 720p, has stereo microphones and an auto-focusing Carl Zeiss Tessar lens. This cam is set to release worldwide for $99 in August. Next is the more portable-friendly and slightly more affordable $59 C510. This model does without the 1080p recording but still does 720p video chat, and folds up neatly to protect the screen for travelers. Then, there are the C310 and C270, $49 and $39 HD webcams for the budget-minded.

More pictures of the webcams and another article at Gizmodo.

That C910 looks to fantastic... perfectly shaped for brickfilming too. The big question for us brickfilmers however, is will they have manual controls like the current brickfilming king of webcams, the QCP9k?

Discuss!

- EDIT -

The latest verdict I received directly from a Logitech rep says that these cameras will have the same manual settings as the QCP9k.

Wow I just hope it takes 720p pictures alot faster than the quickcam 9000.

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

Holy crap I almost wet myself also!!!!!
HD Webcams have been just what us Brickfilmers have been dreaming of for a long time!
And it looks sorta like a Cell Phone!

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

I'd take quality over speed any day, Chuppa.

I'm currently doing my best to get more information on these webcams, especially pertaining to things like manual controls. I'll keep you posted.

- EDIT -

This just in, from the editor at Engadget who wrote that article (and has a unit to review). I asked him if it is possible to control everything manually? (focus, white balance, etc) and got the following reply.

Tim Stevens wrote:

Focus you definitely cannot. You can adjust brightness and digitally zoom, but that's about it, really.

Well, !@#$.

I'm going to contact some other people and squeeze what info I can out of them.

- EDIT 2 -

I made a little image expressing my feelings at the latest news.

Well no manual, its got fail all over now.

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

Fail indeed. If the camera can automatically focus, automatically adjust white balance, automatically do everything, then the hardware is OBVIOUSLY there. IS IT SO HARD TO ADD MANUAL CONTROLS, LOGITECH???

mini/frustrated WHY MANUAL CONTROLS?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?! mini/frustrated

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

Erhm... That´s the point. It doesn´t have manual controls.

The question is, why not?

As just about any brickfilmer knows, manual control over your cameras settings are paramount to animating. Without being able to adjust it as you like and lock those settings, you get random focus, light flicker and all sorts of horrible things that ruin a brickfilm.

It's sucha  horrible shame - these cameras had (have?) so much potential to be the KING of brickfilming cameras.

I know that I was just complaining why did they have to cut that feature.

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

Ah, so you mean "Why no manual controls".

In which case I completely agree.

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

I thought you said it had everything manual except from focus.

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

Where did I say that, Chuppa?

Ah, I see where you got confused. I stuffed up my little comic: it's fixed now.

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

If it does not have manual focus why bother.

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

I am currently calling Logitech HQ (in Canada!) via Skype from Australia to find out this information.

I have been speaking with a customer representative who came back to me with this awesome news: Apparently the webcam DOES indeed have manual controls, accessible via the supplied software, the same as the QCP9k!

THIS IS FANTASTIC.

I'm back. Possibly.

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

These look great. I'm having a real problem with my LQCP 9000 right now, I really don't know why, but it looks blury. However these look great, and the balanced shape means they (hopefully) won't give you a slightly tilted picture like the pro 9000. mini/lol
I supose I could fix that though.

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

Looks like the 9000 comes through again...

Re: Logitech's new HD Webcams

How do you expect your father to get review units, Dog? Is he a reviewer/editor on a large tech site such as Engadget or Cnet?

I think you may have missed some of the more recent posts in this thread, Speedy. It's been confirmed by a Logitech rep that the HD cameras WILL have manual control, the same as the 9k has. Only the hardware is a heck of a lot better.
