Topic: Visual Effects Challenge

Well, with there being an Animation Challenge, I thought why not a Visual Effects Challenge?

If there are any takers...

Theme/Rules

The theme of the challenge is to make the best VFX Brickfilm short possible. It can be anything - a car chase, a Matrix-style fight sequence - as long as the focus is on the VFX. We're not looking for an entire film, just a scene in which the VFX take center stage.

Also - you can use copyrighted msuic for this, so don't worry about making scores.

You can work in pairs for this challenge, so someone could do certain effects and someone else could do others.

The film MUST be longer than fifteen (15) seconds, but can be as long as you like. However, I would recommend keeping it under seven (7) minutes, as from this point onwards it becomes an entire film, rather than a single sequence. It's best to focus on making one effect perfect than on making a Yotta that are okay-ish.

Contest Deadline

The current deadline is February 14th.

Prizes

The satisfaction of winning, I guess.

Judges
Me (jampot)
skwizitanee
Dog

I myself will be making an entry (if this challenge kicks off), but as a judge it won't qualify as an official entrant.

Be creative! Do something stunning, that'll wow everyone! If you don't think you'd be able to win, please still enter, as this isn't about the winning - it's about creating something that you're proud of.

-Jammy

Re: Visual Effects Challenge

Ha, I'll definitely enter this. September 1st looks a tad long. I'd go for... perhaps July, or August 1st.
Good luck to all.

This will be fun.

EDIT: To where should we upload the film?

To YouTube, Vimeo, anywhere, as long as you put a link to it here in the topic.

Re: Visual Effects Challenge

Mkay...however fun this sounds though, I just don't think that it will be as popular as the animation challenge for several reasons: first, not as many people can do effective VFX in a brickfilm, second, I actually don't think it's a good idea to work with partners, because since the real goal is great VFX, the editor is the one doing all the work, and thridly, because September first seems way too long of a time period to do this. Why can't it just be two weeks or so? It only has to be a short clip, it's not like people are going to be making a huge five-minute brickfilm.

That's just my grain of salt though. If lots of people enter (probably me also) then that's awesome!

Re: Visual Effects Challenge

Okay BG, here are my answers:

1) I understand that totally.
2) I never said you had to work in partners. I can change the rules if you think this is a bad idea. Just let me know.
3) The scene can be any length, and five minutes isn't actually that long - just watch The Matrix Reloaded or Revenge of the Sith, where the fights go on for 4 to 10 minutes each. Plus, some advanced effects take a long time to do, so doing more than one will take time.

I hope I have given you an appropriate response.

Can it be on-set effects?

Well, you could keep the partners option if you want, I just think that it's not the greatest idea ever. Also, we're talking about a brickfilm, not a full out movie. Chances are, unless you're making a film all about a single fight that goes on for ever or are making over a 30 min. brickfilm, you won't have a fight scene anywhere near that long. I think it would not be appropriate if we had to wait about 3 months each time for someone to win and the next theme to be announced. It doesn't seem like the greatest idea.

But yeah, the only think I don't like is how much time there is to do this.

Well that isn't the best advise. I am pretty shore that its against youtube and other video sharing site rules to do so. An a matter of fact isn't it against this sites rules to encourage piracy?

I might enter but I shall not be using copyrighted music.

Re: Visual Effects Challenge

Is there a certain type of effect to use, Or do you just create something randomly?

Re: Visual Effects Challenge

VFX, just do anything you like.

I never said you had to, but some people aren't able to produce original scores. A website I would recommend for royalty-free, CC-licencsed music is this guy. It is my understanding that people on this site already use his music, but for those of you that didn't know, voila!

And it isn't technically piracy. As long as you don't make any money from it, you're using it under the 1978 Copyright Fair Use Act. YouTube is powerless against it, and it's totally legal. Look at all of my videos where I use movie OSTs, and you'll see the disclaimer.

Anything. And it can be a variety of things, too.

Re: Visual Effects Challenge

Cool,I'll definately try to enter. I'm in!

Re: Visual Effects Challenge

Deadline is now August 5th. Thanks for the tip, BG.

Also, does anyone wish to judge? You can still make a video, but it won't qualify as an official entry, as that would be unfair. I myself am making a video (Superman Vs Bizarro), but it won't be entered into the challenge as an actual entry.

So, any volunteers?

Re: Visual Effects Challenge

I do!

Re: Visual Effects Challenge

Well, no offense skwizitanee, but I think it would be more appropriate if we had someone with a little more experience, like Smeagol or NickDurron.

EDIT: Sorry, that came out the wrong way. You can still be a judge, but I think we should have someone else a judge as well.

Re: Visual Effects Challenge

And you actually believe some of those will be a judge?
You shall be happy if you can find any judges at all.
