Re: Hollywood is Running Out of Ideas
They are re-doing The Wizard of Oz. Thats not cool. Its a classic. That, and I saw the dead guy in the background last time I saw it. It was... Creepy.

They've done several versions of The Wizard of Oz over the years. It'll just be another one.

Mmm, not in a widely distributed feature film format, to my knowledge. Of course there have been television shows, animated films, indirect adaptations and such, but I think a direct remake of the film is something unprecedented. The only way I can see them pulling it off is if they decided to draw more heavily from the novel, and changed the tone entirely. Trying to recapture the spirit of the original film would be a terrible decision, IMO.
I think my big issue is, if they are going to make huge changes, they should just make a new story entirely. Everyone knows what they want The Wizard of Oz to be, it doesn't make sense to me to remake it, as something similar or different, because either way you lose. Of course, I'm sure they'll make money off of it, and that's all that's important.

I don't find remakes/reboots/adaptations inherently offensive. I look at remakes and reboots much as I do varying film adaptations of the same historical event: different productions allow for different visions to be realized and different directions to be taken. A remake does not always (some would argue rarely) deliver to such expectations, but it can be pulled off well. Reboots and remakes can also repair damage wrought by incompetently-directed sequels.
Batman Begins, Casino Royale, The Incredible Hulk and Star Trek were all great at rebooting their respective franchises. The Italian Job, Homeward Bound, Little Shop of Horrors, and Oceans's Eleven, to name a few, were well-made remakes. Again, there are plenty poorly-made examples in these two categories, but to ignore the quality fruits of such efforts is short-sighted, in my opinion.
It is interesting to me to note that one does not hear much criticism of sequels today, an oft-aired complaint of the nineties and early two thousands. Remakes and reboots are simply a more popular target for negativity, hence my hesitance to merely jump upon the bandwagon. Do I think that the films posted by dewfilms hold potential? Perhaps. I'd prefer to wait and see.
My thoughts on specific films:
Tron Legacy is NOT a remake of Tron, as Yahoo seems to think. Additionally, I think it looks pretty dang cool.
Fantastic Four is relatively recent franchise to reboot, but I'm not unhappy about it. It's hard to imagine it doing any greater disservice to the characters and storylines of the comics than the first two movies did.
The Wizard of Oz holds a legendary status and has greatly influenced American culture. We all know that. I can understand people's reticence to get on board a remake. At the same time, however, many people viewed Disney's 1985 semi-sequel in a similar fashion, but in my opinion, it's a good and unique film. And I wonder if the silly Munchkin urban legend will ever go away?.

WHAT?!
FRAME PLEASE.
Yeeah, I've heard of that, and I've watched that part, but I'm more under the impression that it was a bird lifting it's head. There were loads of wild animals they put on set there. But a man DID kill himself by hanging on the set of Wizard of Oz, I just don't think that he actually made it on the film.
But yeah, remaking that movie is wrong on so many levels, I can't even explain to you...

*facepalm*
Honestly, people. Use common sense once in a while.

I dislike all of the "Of the Dead" remakes.
However you see Shaun of the Dead is awesome.
The Italian Job [...]well-made remakes.
D= I disagree... I disagree HARD. In my opinion it was only made because they made the new mini cooper (which is also a terrible remake of a car) and all the charm and cheekyness is lost in the remake and in my opinion it was awful.
That's all I disagree with you about ![]()
I'm one of those annoying people who will immediately and unfairly say "Ahh! Remake?! It'll be crap!" and when it comes around and it turns out to be good... "I said remakes were crap not re-imagings"
I have this great original idea for a movie about a galactic civil war where the only hope for victory lies in the soul of a young psychic warrior and his friends who eventually overcome all odds by beating the clock and destroying an enemy space station.

Wow, now they're making a movie based on the "Battleships" board game. What's next, "Connect Four: The Movie"?

That's more of a homage, not a remake.

A movie of 'Battleships' huh? I'm actually going to give that a chance there needs to be some new naval warfare films.
They should make another Star Wars saga, set like, 200 years after ROTJ.
No, they shouldn't.
They should make a film that isn't a sequel/prequel/remake/re-imagining/spin-off/whatever and try and make something original instead of cashing in on old franchises.
NO!! You don't make a movie to make money! You make a movie to please the people! And then money will come as a cause of that!

Close, but no cigar.
Magic 8-Ball, Monopoly and Ouija board game movies are in the works.
Oh, and Risk too.
"Monopoly: The Movie" sounds exiting.
