Topic: Canon EOS 1000D

Hi

I'm new to this site but I think you guys have an awesome website here mini/bigsmile. But here's the deal: I really like brickfilms and I would like to make some of my own, I got everything figured out (you know software and stuff) except for the camera. I know webcams are easier to use and are a lot cheaper but my dad is going to buy a new Canon for work and I'm allowed to use it... so I'll take that chance mini/lol.
Now, I did some research and I came up with the Canon EOS 1000D. Buying an older model would probably make it easier but my dad wants the newest for his work mini/rolleyes mini/tongue. So what do you guys think?

Thanks!

Re: Canon EOS 1000D

I think as long as you have enough technic peices and can make a good cage for it, that sounds like a good idea.

Re: Canon EOS 1000D

It depends on your dads price range. A lot of photographers are now using the Canon 5D Mark II because of it's image and video quality (it shoots in 1080p HD mini/wink ), but it's around the $2000 range. While this is fine for some people others would prefer spending that on a cheaper camera and buy something else. A more budget option would be the Canon Rebel TSI/500D which is around the $600 but still takes almost as good photos and video as the 5D. I personally wouldn't get the Canon EOS 1000D because it only takes 10.1 MP photos while the TSI takes 15.1 MP photos for just slightly more (the 5D takes 21.1 MP photos BTW). All in all though, it depends on your dads price range and what he wants.

I'll look into it.
Thanks!

Re: Canon EOS 1000D

megapixels are overrated. any digital SLR will produce much better images than any webcam. If you get the EOS100D you'll want to turn the image size down from 10 megapixels to 1 or 2.

Re: Canon EOS 1000D

But that would dramatically bring down the quality of the image. I don't recommend that.

Re: Canon EOS 1000D

I own a Canon EOS 1000D and it is a great camera. To be honest unless you are a professional you don't really need anymore megapixels or features than it provides. The picture quality is fantastic. It is just a budget version of the more powerful Canons. As far as I am aware it uses the same 35mm sensor so the picture quality will be the same. It just has some advanced features blocked in the software.

Canon lenses are not supposed to be the best, but for me It is very good.

The live view function is virtually useless for animating because. 1) You need expensive software to use it. Animation software has to be developed especially to work with the live view mode. There is no webcam mode. The colour balance from the live view is different from the picture you capture, so it is hated by animators.

There is no video mode on the EOS 1000D, so you will need a camcorder for video recording.

Using a DSLR for animating is very time consuming. You fiddle around for ages and often have to work blind. Dont use one unless you really are going to show your animations at a film festival and are expecting to win something. If your any skill level below that, use a webcam (QC9000). You will do much more animating and less time worrying about setup. In addition a DSLR has a large body and often doesn't fiit into your set, so you will still need a webcam anyway.

For lego I actually prefer the picture from my QC9000 webcam than from my Canon. The colours are much brighter and vivid (more lego like if that makes sense). The Canon tries hard to get colours lifelike. The real world being less bright than the lego world!

You have to scale down the image in post, so it doesnt bring down the image quality. no one hosts videos at 3600 x 2400
