Topic: Hollywood is Running Out of Ideas

Seriously, it is.
I can't be the only one out there who is frustrated at the current state of neverending sequels, tv show recreations and remakes. Hey, don't get me wrong, some remakes are decent. But lately, the number of remakes coming out of the woodworks makes me want to bash my head into a wall...several times.

Today's entertainment news story about remakes.
Another list.
List of completed, in the works/talks of remakes.

Just to name a few...
Wizard of Oz
Thundercats
Smurfs
Arthur
21 Jump Street
Creature From the Black Lagoon
The American version of DEATH NOTE?!1?!1!
Red Dawn

I hope Creature from the black lagoon will be a good remake, it's on of my fave classic horrors.

Re: Hollywood is Running Out of Ideas

Have you seen the idea of "The Guardian Owls"? That's just plain pathetic. I'm pretty sure they'll try and fit an O Rly joke in there.

This is why I only watch arthouse films.

That why you're all grumpy and critical all the time?

Just because there are a lot of sucky ones, doesn't mean there aren't any good ones.

Re: Hollywood is Running Out of Ideas

Is there are reason for it being in this forum, or can I movie it to "General Filmmaking?"

Anyway I saw one of those lists of remakes recently and it was pretty discouraging, yeah.  I do enjoy a good effects-laden blockbuster if it's got a good concept, even liked the Star Trek reboot, but stuff like rebooting Spider-man and a remake of Gremlins is sort of appalling to me.

Re: Hollywood is Running Out of Ideas

A remake/reboot of an old franchise is okay every now and again, especially if said remakes/reboots are really good (such as the case of Batman Begins/The Dark Knight, Casino Royale, The Incredible Hulk (supposedly), and Star Trek). But now this is just getting ridiculous, not to mention entirely redundant. At least the remakes/reboots that I mentioned had a point and purpose, and did something unique with each individual franchise. This just seems like remaking movies for the sake of "modernizing" them, because there's no way that the studios will be able to treat each and every one of their planned remakes with the same respect as Batman Begins, Star Trek, or Casino Royale.

Granted, I do have my hopes up for the Coens' remake of True Grit.

Re: Hollywood is Running Out of Ideas

If you look technicly at the Dawn Of The Dead remake, IT IS a good remake.
The Day The Earth Stood Still, THAT was a horrible remake of a fantastic movie.

Re: Hollywood is Running Out of Ideas

Technically it is good, but it just didn't come close to the original.
The day the earth stood still was just terrible.(the remake)

Re: Hollywood is Running Out of Ideas

I would enjoy remaking the Wizard of Oz with more Munchkins getting killed.

Re: Hollywood is Running Out of Ideas

It isn't that they're running out of ideas, they just don't want to take any chances. They don't want to risk giving loads of money to an original idea that turns out to be crap, they're only producing people who have proved themselves, like Christopher Nolan with Inception. The sad reason they just keep on remaking this stuff is because they know it will make some money because it made a lot of money the first time they made it. I want to see them remake bad movies, after all, that's why people remake things right? To make them better. mini/blankexpression
