Without resorting to CGI, I'd say you're pretty much going for a lighting effect to get a transition to black. I've done similar things before - try doing some tests with it and see what you can come up with using careful lighting.

Build a pit (maybe like at the most 10 bricks deep, depending on the angles you want) and at the bottom put black paper, to make sure it's truly black, then from there it's all lighting, like Leonardo said.
Build a pit as deep as you need then Photoshop opt gimp it with a black blur around the bottom edges, I have never done this so I don't know how well it will work
