Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

This episode was better than Asylum of the Daleks. I thought it mixed all the themes well as nothing seemed forced to me because the acting was superb, is it weird that I want Rory's dad Brian as a companion? lol, Mark Williams did a fantastic job with that part.
I loved how Chris Chibnall didn't dwell on making Rory explain what was going on and just let Brian go with it and actually make him a likeable character unlike most of the parents to all the companions in RTD's era.

The direction however wasn't very good compared to the brilliantly directed Asylum as it felt very flat and non inspiring but that almost doesn't matter cause the story was WAY better than I was expecting as I always thought it was going to be a mess that tries too hard to make it rememorable but it is rememorable because of how simple yet smart it is, it isn't the situation that drives the episode - it's the characters and their chemistry with each other.
This makes me very excited for Chris Chibnall's next episode THE POWER OF THREE which does look like a better episode.

EDIT: Also, is it just me or does it feel weird to see Doctor Who with such fantastic CGI? lol

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

Yeah, the dinosaurs looked awesome - and David Mitchell always elevates whatever he's in.

I too was surprised how coherent the story was. As long as the next episode doesn't mix camp with drama then this series might start to win me over. I'm especially looking forward to the Cybermen reboot (but we've still got a while to go yet...)

I am mostly looking forward to The Angels Take Manhattan but the Cybermen story really sounds interesting.
Kinda funny how you are excited to see it when you really hated Neil Gaiman's previous story

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

Does anyone else think that it's significant that Solomon's computer didn't recognize the Doctor?
It could have just simply been incomplete, but what if somehow the Doctor has now been erased from more than just Dalek memory?

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

That would make for an interesting story arc. When I first watched it I took as the doctor was written as dead but now that I think about it again that doesn't make any sense lol.

I'm excited, but at the same time I'm repeating to myself over and over "Please dont suck. Please dont suck". As long as he doesn't make them multicoloured then he's on the right track (and please dont make inferior minions like the deformed Angels or the Cybermen in robes or the humans with Dalek eyes. They are not scary and just pad things out)

Hahah, I still don't get how you can hate his previous story.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

A Town Called Mercy

No way near as good as the others this Season so far. I was fairly dissapointed as it really looked like a fantastic story and Toby Whithouse is a great writer. It was just nothing to it, there was no sense of the grand scale that the trailers were teasing and it was just about a Cyborg having a little problem with one of the citizens.
Matt Smith was amazing as usual with some great line deliveries and charm. Amy and Rory were nobodies in this episode as they never really got anything to do except being part of the Doctor's plans that we had no idea what was going on because we were never told, they could pretty much have been replaced with other citizens so we could have some more characterization. Apparently Mr.Whithouse thought he had given the citizens enough personality because in the end we see The Doctor drawing a gun with one of the citizens while smiling goodbye as if it was something they had done alot together but we the only time we saw them speak with eachother had the Doctor being pissed and him being angry. A thing I've noticed about most of Toby Withouse's scripts is that his characters never really get an actual personality so we don't care about them and yet when they're killed off (he seems to like killing his characters) it suddenly changes the tone to a really sad note everytime which was VERY noticeable in The God Complex and it showed in this episode aswell and it just comes across as dull.

The director Saul Metzstein (Spelling?) was better this week than he was last week as this episode looked great with some fantastic swooping camera shots of the town. As for the music I think this is Murray Gold at his absolute best and I don't think I ever heard an already existing soundtrack in the episode at all (no "I Am The Doctor").

The cyborg himself was a pretty dull and uninteresting character with a really annoying voice.  Or actually, every character except the Doctor were dull in this story. I'm not a huge western fan (Although The Good, the bad and the ugly is one of my favorite movies of all-time) but I think western fans may like this episode, people who liked Cowboys and Aliens will defenitly like this episode.

All in all it was no way near as good as the other Episodes this season and no way near as good as this episode could have been with a more interesting story. I didn't hate it however, I still thought it was pretty good but I did expect alot more out of it.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

Ok wow that was a nice episode

Probably my personal favorite of the season so far. It was emotional, intriguing and fun to watch, I enjoyed it a lot.

The only complaint I have is the Gunslinger's voice and the stupid ending. But yeah it was fun to see the Doctor acting like the Doctor again and Amy and Rory being cool for once.

Really looking forward to the next episode, hopefully it'll be a two parter? fjdiredsjnfiusdnmc

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

My only big complaint would be the Gunslingers voice.

Oh! I know guys! Lets just lower the pitch a bunch! That's going to sound awesome!

It's a bit disappointing with all of the other cool voices in Doctor Who, like the Daleks.

However, besides the voice, the Gunslinger looked really, really awesome.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

I dont like it when people try to juggle severity with humour.

Actually, I do like it when people juggle severity with humour - when they do it well. I watched 'Winnie The Pooh 2011' recently, and I found it really clever how one can both laugh at Eeyore and then feel really sorry for him. Yes, Doctor Who cannot do this - and if you want proof, look at the most recent episode. The difference between 'A Town Called Mercy' and 'Dinosaurs on a Spaceship' was that in 'Dino' the humour was very good, but the serious stuff lacked any subtlety. I enjoyed 'Dinosaurs on a Spaceship' (the first episode I've genuinely enjoyed since 'The Girl Who Waited' and 'The God Complex' - when suddenly Doctor Who decided to be really good for an all too brief moment) because the campiness was so glorious that I didn't care about the flaws for once. But, on a bad day, I will still moan out how the episode failed to balance severity with humour. Here, its similar - only the humour sucked, so I suppose it didn't matter. (They ruined the best joke! The undertaker goes to measure him and the Doctor says "Thanks, but I don't need a new suit". I was starting to laugh when the undertaker said "I'm the undertaker" - and the subtle joke was ruined)

I just don't get why they chose the most hilariously clichéd of settings to deal with such epic and complex themes. At least in 'Dino' the story was upfront and simple (though surprisingly coherent). The theme of war, the consequences, and the motivation is something you could write an entire book about. Here they devote just one 45 min episode about it - I had to re-wind iPlayer at the end because they glanced over the other Doctors war crimes so quickly. Also, I didn't care. I didn't care about all the other people dying. I didn't care about either the other Doctor or the Gunslinger because both were unlikable. The other Doctor switches back and forth from kindly gentleman to despicable snake, and the Gunsliger jumps from the Terminator to Robocop in quick succession. I was quite happy for the entire village to be destroyed...

Actually - maybe its just me. I'm constantly begging this show to give us really mature episodes when I forget this show is family-friendly. The RTD era would often get dark/deep (ironically every single Moffat episode is a prime example of this - which is odd since he's been tamer than CBBC ever since be became boss), but I never lost any sleep over it when I was younger, and nothing ever went over my head either. On the other hand, 'Star Trek' was family-friendly and that threw in philosophy and theology almost every other episode. But, this is not 'Star Trek' and I'm sure that the writers don't want to alienate younger fans. Indeed, whilst 'Star Trek' is family-friendly - I dont know a single Star Trek fan who's under the age of 30. Its like I dont know any 'My Little Pony' fans who are actually the targeted demographic...

I suppose its just me getting older. But still; good stuff appeals to adults too, and there are just as many adult Doctor Who fans as there are young ones (hence the really creepy fan-base Karen Gillan has built).

Actually, I'm way under 30, and I've loved Star Trek since I was very, very young. Whenever I first saw it, it was too long ago to remember.

ATTENTION ALL YE INTENDING TO READ THIS POST: I am not what you'd call a 'big' Dr Who fan. I've only just started watching them and I like the show, but I doubt I could ever give an episode such an in-depth review as any of you (hello, Max). Be prepared for a lot of stupid-sounding statements from me and keep this in mind.

My recent Dr. Who watching spree has somehow resulted in a LEGO TARDIS, Dalek, and 9th, 10th, and 11th Doctors sitting on my dresser. Pictures will come as soon as I fix Tennant's hair.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

THE POWER OF THREE

I had high hopes for this episode mainly because of the writer, Chris Chibnall proved with Dinosaurs on a Spaceship that he truly understands what Doctor Who is about and wrote the Best Episode since The Girl Who Waited last year.
The Power of Three did look like a more proper Doctor Who episode (Dinosaurs was more there for the sheer fun of it) so it was interesting to see Chris write that in a blockbuster style. Ironically this is the least blockbustery episode this Season has had so far but I have to say it is (almost by far) the best. Everything came together in spectacular fashion. The directing is almost as good as Asylum of the Daleks, the writing is the best this season has showed so far, the acting has been improved since last week... just wow.

I Really tried to be critical of it while watching but I just couldn't cause it had everything I wanted it to have, Brian Williams was an amazing character this time again turning out to be my favorite companion parent ever so it's sad that this is going to be his last episode since the Ponds are departuring next week but it's great to see he left in an amazing episode. This episode truly was amazing and i'm shocked that I am saying that because you don't get to say that often.

Ofcourse there are a few minor problems with it but I don't think they should have been fixed (like how Brian was able to do a daily log of the cubes for over 300 days or how Brian could watch the Cube for 4-5 days after the Doctor left him in the TARDIS) but it all added to the mystery of them and didn't really distract me from the story.
The episode kinda felt like it was written in the RTD era of the show because of how much the cubes was on the news and how it felt like it was the end of the world. Hopefully every writer of the show will look at Chris' episodes this season and be inspired so we can continue to have amazing stories like Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and The Power of Three in the future.

Quick Next Time Trailer Review - REALLY excited, The Ponds final chapter looks like an ending they deserve on the most impressive companion journey I have ever seen on Doctor Who.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

I'm pretty new to Dr. Who, just having watched the two most recent episodes ("A Town Called Mercy" and "The Power of Three").  So far, I like it.

The Power of Three was great, I enjoyed the sense of mystery around the cubes, and the fake BBC "News Broadcasts" were great too.  (The bit on TV with Alan Sugar was pretty funny as well.)  I found the episode a bit rushed, though, and the whole "Power of 3" thing at the end was pretty cheesy.  Those "doctors" with the weird mouths and the little girl/robot were never really fully explained, either, which I missed.  Still, over all, I enjoyed it.  I'm especially looking forward to the next episode, with the stone statues!

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

Should have been a two-parter.

The whole episode reminded me of a mediocre Stephen King story - but Stephen King at least spent ages slowly building suspense, even though the pay-off sucked.

The thing is - the suspense was great, but there should have been more of it. I know it seems weird to be asking a Doctor Who episode to be about the Doctor getting to know the Ponds and living with them together, but I honestly wanted to see that. It was getting towards the end of the episode and I was thinking "OK, the 'To Be Continued' credit will come up soon" but then within a heartbeat - it was all solved. Nothing was really explained in the end, and suddenly at the end the writers like "Oh, I totally forgot about the whole 'Rory-and-Amy-dont-want-to-do-this-anymore' thing. Um...titledrop! And that's it! I'm off to the pub.....what? No, I don't need to do a second draft!"

Spoiler (click to read)

Really? The whole secret behind the entire thing was Emperor Palpatine? (Who was just as over the top and scene chewing as the real Emperor) All that rushed yet still interesting build-up...and its that!? Its just some generic "Humanity is a pest! It must be wiped out!" that we've seen in Doctor Who many times before. Why is humanity a pest? What have we done wrong? Why was the ship on autopilot? Why target earth now when Emperor Palpatine has apparently been ancient myth among the Time-Lords - who have existed since god-only-knows-when??

I thought it was building up to something really intelligent. The cubes scanned the media and humans to work out a fatal weakness - I thought it was going to be some elaborate scheme for a load of aliens to somehow invade, like what the Daleks did in 'The Parting of the Ways' where they lurk behind a cloaking field poised right above earth. I never liked 'Army of Ghosts' because it was so obvious that the ghosts were evil and Earth was being so unbelievably stupid by letting a supernatural entity just walk around like normal - but that had a better pay-off! The secret behind the cubes didn't have to be a famous enemy, but I was expecting some big reveal at the end just before a 'To Be Continued' credit.

And - AGAIN - the writers have forgotten about balancing humour and sincerity. The humour at the start of the episode was great because there all just waiting around for these cubes which could be anything, but are not actually doing any harm. But then, when a third of the population of the world dies they still find a few wisecracks to pull. Um...a third of the population is lying dead guys! I know this is a family show, but I think the time for jokes has passed!

If anyone wants to know the definition of 'Deus Ex Machina' - just look at how the Doctor suddenly managed to save one third of the population from heart-failure (Come on writers! 'Deus Ex Machina' was old even when the Ancient Greeks used it!!)

I'm extremely disappointed. This episode had some really good parts, but it was all spoilt by the pacing and the terrible ending.

And the Stone Angels are back. Not looking forward to this after Moffat brutally murdered the Angels the last time we saw them - but, at least he's remembered that Stone Angels send you back in time rather than kill you. Oh, and just when I was about to applaud this series for keeping River Song away...she's back!! (Yes, we get it Moffat! Your being really clever by having Rivers storyline go backwards whilst the Doctors storyline goes forwards. This stopped being interesting halfway through Series 6! Either drop her for a while, or just make her a permanent companion! And everyone complains that RTD just wouldn't let Rose go away....)

Agree proper Doctor Who story/plot.

Didn't need the side line Roy and Amy 'other places we visited' bit that felt like a bit of a 'filler'.

One hole that I spotted was that the Doctor needed to use Amy's kitchen for a lab. Surely the Tardis has a fully equipped lab in there somewhere !

Still it was pretty decent. But if you think about it, it wasn't that much different from the 'Atmos' episode.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

There are other plot holes in there aswell, like how noone in the hospital noticed that patients were going missing or noone noticed that the little girl was sitting there for a year.
Still the other stuff outshined it making them unimportant, this was a fantastic episode.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

lol YES ! I hadn't considered the little girl sitting there for a year mini/lol
