And, also, if you put a tan brick path built up from a baseplate, then fill the area with sand up to the top of the path, covering the studs, they would walk on it much easier and it would look cool.

I think you can suspend your disbelief if you just think they're the first people to set foot in there since it was built.

Mobile, I was trying to give some ideas, but I wasn't really content with my brainstorming. Of course, you might be able to twist any of the ideas to your liking, and make them really cool, if they inspire you! Filling the room up with sand, making it a pretty standard quick-sand routine just might be good enough to make into a cool exciting action sequence.
There's the concept of everything crumbling and self-destructing, but that brings up the question: why would you build a trap that destroys what you're trying to protect along with the person trying to steal it? It's done pretty often in fiction though.

with the room filling up with sand, I can see the problems with it, perhaps use clay with an outer crust of sand, or keep a continuous flow of sand so it is motion blurred and maybe add in a cup or so each frame. Well, maybe not continuous, just pour it whilst taking the picture.
