You can definitely pull off an abduction with no VFX, and although it's harder, it would turn out a lot better if you put the required effort into it and stuff.
But yeah, I agree, there should be simpler challanges. Like animating water!! (like plastic saran wrap, pouring it out of a cup or something, that's pretty challanging while still very essential.)
Also, Ev, I think you just double posted.

I agree with buikes, next challenge something that could be done without vfx.
Special effects are different from visual effects. And special effects can be used for challenges like this. Also, what qualifies as visual effects? Does masking? It's hard to define.

By this I mean make a challenge that is not geared to whoever can edit the best but to who can animate the best. Masking is fine because all you are doing is removing supports. I do still believe this is an ANIMATION challenge. I loved these until they got well VFXey (I made up a word deal with it). :D

I think there is nothing wrong with the theme. Take a look at the two entries so far, it looks like they only use masking, so what's the problem? You can have great special effects and have a frame rate of 2 and I wouldn't choose it probably. The animating in this theme is relevant. Just my opinion Masking is the only thing that would probably be needed here. You could even take the theme and make an animation about an alien on foot kidnapping a human instead of the conventional idea we think of.
I agree there is nothing too VFXey in this challenge, or in the previous ones. This is still an animation challenge as animation is the most important part of it. Also, as Repelling Spider said, he didn't say it needed to be a man taken by a tractor beam, so it really leaves to your imagination try to find the most appopriate way of abducting someone without vfx.
Is there only two entries so far? May not be hard for repellingspider to judge. Jus' sayin.
Here is my entry. Enjoy!
I rather liked that, the masking was nice, and it was especially cool how you made the light go out.
Sorry I haven't made something, I've been sick for the last two weeks, which doesn't usually get me in a good animation mood.
My entry:

I MIGHT enter this...
(Knowing me I probably won't though)
But I really like this challenge!
Alas... I won't have mine finished. It was to ambitious I guess. I have all the stop motion finished, just not the effects, and I am going to be too busy tomorrow to finish those. O well, I'll just release it sometime later this week I guess... I hope another person or two enter, only two entries isn't much. I was so looking forward to choosing the next theme too...

Off topic: YAY, you used my word!
On Topic: I have come to the conclusion that the theme is not the problem. Its what people do with the theme. So far im impressed with how people chose to animate it. Yet, I hope to see something animators would use more often in the next theme... Like how to animate an argument. I would like to see what people would do with that. Thank you for changing my mind, and I hope this challenge gets many entries.
