I find this whole ordeal hilarious considering that The Interview honestly doesn't look too good. It looks like the sort of film I would watch after a really busy day. If NK just rolled their eyes and let the film get released - I'm sure everyone would've just forgotten about it after a few years. Now, the film will be eternally remembered as the movie that almost started a war, destined to top 'WatchMojo's Top 10 Most Controversial Films' list. Essays will be written, articles printed, blogs posted, documentaries shot. There's probaly going to be a film made about this film. The digital prints of the movie itself will become a holy grail amongst film buffs despite it's actual quality. History has been made.

Nice one, North Korea. *slow clap*

It's probably the most extreme example of the Streisand Effect yet.

I'd have to agree with you, the film itself doesn't look that great.  It just looks like another probably quite lame American comedy film, with its only distinctive features being that it features North Korea and North Korea got all upset about it.

It's the beginning of the first North Korean Reich. . Oh wait, it's already started.

Re: For "Interview" Moviegoers & other Movie loving Friends

I think there's good evidence to suggest North Korea had nothing to do with either the hack or the empty threats that caused theatre chains, Sony, and eventually Paramount to go out of their way to show what cowards they are. The U.S. is just using it as an excuse to rattle their saber at North Korea because it's convenient. The media is going with North Korean cyberterrorism because it's a sexy headline.

Conveniently related story from earlier this year.

The hackers initially focused on Sony's poor treatment of employees, and didn't even mention The Interview until after the media had jumped onto conspiracy theories about North Korea. What's more likely: that a recently fired staff of people who knew the inner workings of Sony's web security wanted revenge, or that a country with no internet culture to speak of thoroughly hacked Sony's servers despite a lack of any knowledge of their system, all the while using language that isn't a part of their country's lexicon?

Re: For "Interview" Moviegoers & other Movie loving Friends

It's oddly reminiscent of the UN Meeting scene from Iron Sky, where North Korea tries to take credit for creating the Nazi invasion fleet from the moon, and everyone else bursts out laughing.

...except that in this case people are taking North Korea seriously.

Mr Vertigo,

What Smeagol was trying to point out is, NK has nothing to do with this, people are taking the threats from these terroists who call them selves Guardians of Peace, who people say arn't linked with NK. But I don't know they got a dodgy president who favors slavery and doesn't allow his own citizens to leave their own country bit harsh but Mmm..

Re: For "Interview" Moviegoers & other Movie loving Friends

I'll admit, I don't know who the heck did it. You can't trust and news media anymore - most of it is twisted so people hear what they want to hear. I doubt anyone really knows who did it. It might of been some idiot in America even who decided to hack Sony. In short, we don't really know who did it.

Re: For "Interview" Moviegoers & other Movie loving Friends

I still firmly believe that if North Korea had just rolled their eyes and dismissed the film as crass shlock (like I do whenever hollywood seems to think that England is a country ruled by the Queen that entirely comprises of one city and a few desloate villages) rather than kick up a fuss then this wouldn't have happened. NK holds such a tight hold on censorship that there's no way this film could ever be used as a rallying point - and it's not supposed to be a rallying point. It's a mindless comedy doomed to sit at the back of Netflix for two years before vanishing from the public memory. Or at least it would have been...

Perhaps I have no empathy for the human race, but to me this whole scandal just gets funnier and funnier. First NK accidentally creates publicity over a mediocre-looking product, then e-mails are leaked exposing executives who act exactly like parodies of themselves, then people begin joking that NK are responsible, then the whole thing threatens to explode into physical conflict, and now people genuinely questioning if NK is responsible.

Again, this would all make a much better film that The Interview...

Re: For "Interview" Moviegoers & other Movie loving Friends

Turns out Sony stored confidential passwords in a folder marked "Password"...

Also, North Korea is now denying involvement in the hack and now wants to set up a joint probe with the US to investigate it.

I'm beginning to wonder whether the Sony hackers hacked news websites as well and posted articles from The Onion on them.

TO Mr. Vertigo, I'm unaware of the Streisand Effect.  Can you enlighten me?

I posted the 28 seconds the hackers/terrorists don't want you to see.  Sorry, I didn't know that the link was to a site discouraged by BiM.  Here's an alternate link (Warning- pretty graphic high PG13 violence:)

Max Butcher, I agree that this story seems to be getting sillier.  If NK is involved in this, I don't think it's directly, especially if they're threatening to bomb U.S. theatres.  Now that the American government yesterday is now saying officially that NK is involved somehow, I'm more skeptical than ever!  However, this is in line with Kim Jong-Un's thin skin!  His inability to handle criticism is greater than even Mr. Obama's.

I keep hearing about "No forced entry" into the Sony system.  This indicates the possiblity that a disgruntled employee may be involved.  What do you think?

I hear people saying also that this is a poorly-conceived publicity stunt from Sony.  That doesn't make sense, because they'd then have leaked their own scripts to 50 films an a digital print of the Annie remake, and public trust.  The losses are too great.
