Question; since time is getting short, and I am seriously wondering if I will finish on time. Will I get demerit points if I submit half a movie, with a "To Be Continued" thing at the end?

You'll probably suffer some losses in the "story" category; but if you can make it convincing and have it look like a good stopping point (even if there is a cliffhanger for next time) it would probably be better than not entering.

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

is this the only contest of this year?:/

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

I don't know. Is BRAWL going on this year?

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

STAR is our main summer contest, but there may be smaller contests later, also THAC and that sort of thing, though I don't know if there'll be another THAC this year.

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

Uh oh.... I have no audio OR footage! My mic's broke, so I'm gonna need other people to voice, or it will be a silent film!

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

I'd like to see another BRAWL this year myself, but that would be up to Munzapoppa, not you, correct Smeagol?

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

Only got two scenes done and haven't been able to finish the 3rd scene and the deadline's 11 days from now.

Oh no, here comes the panic.

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

My Computer crashed, and I lost ALL my footage! So "In Search Of A Pardon" will not be my S.T.A.R. entry, as I can't redo all that footage in time. So I hereby implement plan B, "Streets Of Legorado", Thanks to Squash, FLIPaBRICK, and everyone else who tried out for parts, I will still try to finish the film, but not as a S.T.A.R. entry.

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

So, as I am going along I would like to address something,
Compression. I've not had time to read all 39 pages of this post but I am deeply concerned by the 30mb limit. Usually that doesn't bother me at all, BUT in this case, I cannot submit a .FLV or .F4V (Flash compression scheme) so as I type this, what I have done now is being compressed to see if I can get it down to an acceptable size. I am sure that the 30mb cap is so the judges don't have to spend all day downloading an 800mb 2:00 of uncompressed animation. I really don't like the quality of my videos when they go from 720p to 360X240.

I guess I am asking, what compression scheme/codec/resolution would you recommend to get a good quality video and meet the required size limit?

Also, you say that .AVI .MOV and .WMV are acceptable, does that include any and all codecs that package themselves as one of those three formats? persay, XVID and DIVX are packaged as .avi, are those acceptable?

thanks
~Casey

Just a quick little update to the above message, I was able to compress it to 360X240 using XVID compression I got the first half of my entry down to 14.9mb acceptable. it doesn't look nearly as good. will judges look at both the high and low quality that are submitted?

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

I personally would probably only look at the high quality version, but it is good to have a lower quality version for judging purposes.  However, the original rules were not going to accomplish exactly what I had in mind when I wrote them, so I've made a change.  Try to keep the file within reason but we do want a high quality file if possible.  Any codec for those formats is acceptable, yes.  Have you tried h.264?

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

I've not dabbled to much on the .mov side. Also do you want a downloadable or is a stream good enough? I can provide both, and the stream would be from my own privatized web address.

now I just got to finish filmin'! heh.

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

Is real a good compression software?

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

Lil''JJ Ive never heard of 'Real' But This Is absolutely great!
Download all the stuff in tutorial.

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

I don't recommend real. the reason, real is a real pain in the butt. no one uses or wants to pay for realplayer... capedkid, great link but I've got one even easier for you. its called AGK it uses virtualdub but it is expressly for XVID and DIVX compression. LINKY

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

Real offers decent compression, but Real format simply is not allowed for submitting your entry to the contest, as stated in the rules.

No, a streaming video wouldn't be good enough, it must be downloadable.

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

Unless I can do a 5 minute film in about 10 days, I'm out.

If I can get around to it, probably. I haven't really been motivated to do anything productive for a few months, so it depends on wether I can win my battle against lazyness and procrastination.

It's doable, I made Crown of Syracuse in 10 days from scripting to completion.
