Can it be a scene from a short story?
Yes it can.
For example, if we are doing a scene from a book, can we use are own voices?
I don't really think it's fair not to allow copyrighted audio from movies. I understand the anti-piracy thing, but how are we supposed to recreate film scenes that contain music when we're not allowed to use the scores?
Can it be a scene for a TV series?

Yep! Just set it to private first, and when the contest is over, you can set it to public.

You can make it either privater or unlisted. Either one is fine!

You can adapt to an extent, but try not to alter anything too severely

This is a cool contest! But unfortunately I'm kinda in the middle of a big project, (And if i get distracted i might never finished it,) But who knows i might enter sooner or later. If anyone make a entry from a scene from "Big Trouble In Little China" i will give you a virtual cookie.
