This actually happened to me except I'm not dating her she is one of my best childhood friends and she wasn't mad. Instead of buying her something she was asking her mom to buy, I chose Lego. I felt really bad about it after though.

although I don't have a girlfriend, I have some close friends that would be girls, yet, I wouldn't be dumb/foolish enough to make that mistake.
