Spiteyourface's animation is more cartoony. Not Life-like

I agree. his animation, is good, yet it lacks the "human" touch, like MindGame or Nos. I love Tony's work because of his massive sets, and he actually has been sponsored by lego. And because he executes his shots very well.

Your forgetting about...... SMEAGOL STUDIOS!!!

Re: Who has the most life-like animation?

Eh, my animation isn't really up to the standard of, say, MindGame or Nosniborus.  Though I think I'm improving substantially on it in my current project.

Re: Who has the most life-like animation?

I used to strive to create "life-like" animation. I'd drool over Nosniborus's Grace, and look up to Mindgame, Buxton, and pretty much everyone else mentioned in this thread.

IMHO... you can only go so far with "life-like" animation in LEGO. There's a certain point where it just falls apart. For instance, my main problem was always running. I could NEVER get it to look right. And even the standard walk cycle has its' own problems as well. Compare a walk test of a LEGO man to a real person walking. Does it look life-like now? No. Smooth, perhaps, but not life-like.

The "cartoony" style is beginning to catch my eye...

Re: Who has the most life-like animation?

One thing cartoony animation has over realistic animation is that it is so much fun to animate. I don't think I could manage a 3 minute "realistic" film. I new rule I have is there should be something interesting in as many shots as I can, and it's working out pretty well so far. Take the radio shot from my latest film, "Title is Irrelevant". Originally, the plan was to have the character reach down and turn on the radio. However, I couldn't get the positioning right, and it was boring, so I just decided to have him kick the radio. And not just kick the radio; a full out I-Want-To-Launch-This-Radio-To-The-Moon exaggerated cartoony kick, and it worked so well, and I loved animating that shot.

That's exactly what I've been thinking Graeme! Cartoony animation IMO not only is more fun to animate, but is so much more fun to watch and entertaining. I've been striving for this style of animation in some of my recent work, like The Desktop and Kazoo.

How do you pull off cartoony animation

A lot of smooth wobbles in everything does the trick for me.

Re: Who has the most life-like animation?

Watching NXTManiac's The Desktop series might give you an idea.

Exaggerate things. Do a couple tests, taking normal movements and over-doing them.

Quite frankly, I think all of you have animation that is too lifelike, considering they're lifeless plastic toys mini/tongue
