Haha, its no secret, believe me. Mac OSX is very easy to hack. (albeit, somethings like changing the Finder name in the menu bar to "benlen," changing the name of the "trash" to "recycling" take a little digging.)
And changing the message "the application [insert] quit unexpectantly" to "S%iT! F*c(k, this application quit its beeatch @ss on you!" or changing "Force Quit" to "Force Quit this piece of S44t" was extremely gratifying.
Mac OSX 10.5 as you guys know introduced the 3D style dock.
There are websites such as LeopardDocks.com (or something) that had TONS of different dock styles to choose from. Just do a google search for "custom leopard dock" and you'll find instructions on how to install them. It requires delving into System files (not for the faint hearted if you don't know computers.)
As for the Finder and trash icons, that's easy. You can try to hack the system files manually, but that's a real pain in the ass (cause Mac OSX takes it personally that you want to get rid of its icons for ones of your own )
To accomplish this task, I use a free app called LiteIcon that can be used to easily replace your finder and trash icons. I also use a program called ImgtoIcns (ICNS is the image file used for all Mac OSX apps.) Replacing ICNS with PNG is not a good idea generally because the PNGs or JPEGS that you repalce them with can appear blurry, etc, etc.
I also use a Mac OSX skin, replacing the generic Mac Aqua skin with a uniform skin called iLeopard. Do a google search for iLeopard, install it, and you'll be impressed. It really cleans up the interface.
The dock icons I use (currently all black) are based off the popular Adobe icons that you're all familiar with. I got the template for them on deviant art a while back and modified them for my own usage.
Replacing the icons of individual applications (ex: Firefox is Fx, Thunderbird is Th) is tedious, but worth it. You can either 1) search through the application's "contents" folders to find the and replace the ICNS dock icon, or you can use the "Get Info" page of your icns, copy that over the older icon of the application in its Get Info tab, and boom, there you go. This latter method is easier but often screws up.
Cheers. Enjoy modding OSX.
Thanks to benlen, I have been making my Mac look better slowly. I am still working on the application icons, but I so far have changed the dock, the finder and trash icons to brick icons, and the HD to a Wall-e themed thing. Not to mention a snazzy wallpaper. Click me!
Ahh, how I miss the old Aqua from Tiger and previous... For some reason I find Leopard irritating.
I just watched that movie the other day. I love it.
This is my desktop at half size, one monitor at 1920x1200 and the other at 1280x1024

Never seen that one, it's not from that movie. It's art from one of the comics from Jean Giraud, who also calls himself 'Moebius', also famous of his Blueberry comics. We have a whole collection of him and I used to read them, I like his style and the nice colors he uses.

That is sleek ManVan. I like the cartoon feel in the dock. Fits perfectly with the wallpaper.
