You would be better off getting a bulk set.
The online Pick-A-Brick is over-priced. But if you have a Lego Store nearby, the Pick-A-Brick wall is really worth it. Check this out.
Look at garage sales. I have a cousin who spent $20 and got 20 pounds of lego all of it from amazing sets.
Bricklink is pretty cheap, I get stuff off there. Perhaps try that out.
Or ebay, or boot fairs. Some people sell stuff so cheap.
