Inscor's talking about something that's effectively an 8x16 brick - like a big plate but the height of a brick. I have green and light grey ones from the '80s and a couple of dark bley ones from a recentish set. 

A bit of a search on peeron.com reveals that [url=http://peeron.com/inv/parts/4204]this[/url] might be the droid you're looking for. There's a table on the right of that page with links to bricklink stores that have them in stock.
