I'm always an advocate for Finale brand software. Their Notepad software only costs a few dollars (used to be free :( ) and provides some very basic MIDI sounds and music writing capabilities. The more expensive versions allow you to do some pretty complex orchestral writing. Finale does have considerable ability for writing jazz and rock kind of notation also, but I would only recommend it if you know how to handle music writing on a standard music staff with time and key signatures, etc.
