Not doing a script for a silent film works for me, because I'm very visual and imaginative so I can make a good idea of what it looks like in my head (a sort of in-brain storyboard). With dialouge, I need to have confirmed lines because there are different ways to say the same thing and I have to know exactly what to animate.

The script is IMO not just for finishing dialog. When you work with the material in a script or storyboard it´s much easier to see where improvement can be made and where the week spots are.

About catching ideas: I use my pnone. I opften get the best ideas on my way to work. Then I "say it to the phone  " - If I dont I will forget it after 10 min of work...

Not true.

I write a script for my THAC entry, and there's no dialogue there... :P

100% seconded. I've always got a whole load of ideas which would probably make great stories, but I just can't be bothered writing them down. It seems to take away the 'magic' when they're on paper.

Personally when I get an idea, I write it down, and work on it.

I write a simple few sentences in Notepad that would look similar to this:

IDEA: Man escapes jail by befriending guard

Montage of a man doing crimes

Man is caught

Titles

Man in jail

Man starts talking to guard

They start getting along

etc etc.

After that, when I have a complete-ish storyline, I write a script. It's much easier to write a script when you have a clear idea of where you want the story to go. Of course it will probably go through some changes over time, but it's still worth it.

I'm not really sure if it's the "proper" way, but that's how I do it haha.

Good luck.

My son (12), who is a LEGO enthusiast and brick filmer, and I had an interesting discussion about ideas the other day. He has a lot of ideas, is very creative but he get a bit tired when I tell him that his has to develop the idea, make a script and(or a story board). The reason why I write this? Well, I did some thinking and wanted to hear your opinion:

To me the idea is importent, but the development of the idea even more! And my question is: what do you do when you get an idea? Here is my way:

1. I try to record all ideas. On my iphone (I use Evernote) or on the computer. I never reject an idea and I try to love all my ideas :P
2. I try to develop the idea. I make sketches, start to write a script to find out if the idea can actually be used for a film.

I´ve never tried to develop ideas via a storyboard, but maybe its a good idea? Or maybe start building?

How do you handle your ideas?
