I thought The Shining was overrated ... Shelly Duvall bugged me, and that kid croaking 'Red Rum' was godawful ... it did have its moments, but I was a little disappointed overall. I'm probably hugely in the minority on that one, though, as loads of people seem to love it.

Stanley Kubrick is a true example of quality over quantity.
As is Terrence Malick.
Aaah, you beat me too it. Then again, I'm not sure if you can talk about quality over quantity when it comes to cinema. There are directors who made 80 or 90 films to get a handful of universally acclaimed masterpieces, and I wouldn't grudge them for it at all.

I've only seen 2001 and Dr. Strangelove. Both are good. I really need to see Barry Lyndon because I hear it's his best.

I have only seen 'Doctor Strangelove' and '2001'. I prefer 'Strangelove' as the better movie experience. Sure, '2001' has more thought and visual qualities, but I've always preferred the witty and enjoyable over the deep and meaningful. Its just more entertaining to watch, and makes me want to come back more. Meaningful is just as important though.

'2001' is still the second best Science Fiction movie I have ever watched, rivalled only by Star Wars. I know its blasphemy to put Lucas *spit* in front of Kubrick (who, judging by these two movies alone, is a genius), but again, wit and enjoyability over deep and meaningful (I'm talking about the Original Star Wars Trilogy. There are no prequels or spin-off's).

Yeah, I've just removed all credibility I have. I'm off to watch more Kubrick...
