That's what I did. So I took an 8 x 16 baseplate (not sure if I should call it a baseplate. It's so small :3) Then made a track for it. I made the track 8 x 16 then laid tile pieces out on the edges for the baseplate to slide on. Then I put regular bricks along the sides to keep it from coming out. The only con is that there is this tiny gap on the side. I figured out that to fill that I use this piece: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=4865 (Tip it up-side-down).

Also, here's a test I made using it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ6-HAXCu5I

If you don't understand, I can post pics. ;)
I want to build a panning rig that allows me to do a arch shaped pan.

I know some people have used train tracks to achieve this; make a track the way you want it, then attach your camera to a train bottom. In reality, you could do this for a simple line pan also, but using the brick idea is better. But for an arched pan, train tracks is really the only way you can go if you want to use LEGO pieces.

Well, you could use Sean's cradle and then make a rectangle outline of where you wish to pan from 1X4s or something. Then fill in the gap in the middle with smooth tiles. Then the camera will smoothly glide over the area, giving you a pan. I did this before and it worked very well.
I hope I helped, and that you understand what I mean, lol.
