Awesome!

To upload images go to a site like majhost or Tinypic or Photobucket and click the upload button in a folder. Once uploaded in TinyPic on the side will be a box saying "Image for fourms" copy and paste that here, and maybe even do it multiple times if you have more than one images. On other sites right click the image and click "Copy image location" paste into the fourms and add image tags by selecting one image at a time and clicking the button that looks like this while the URL which you pasted is selected. The button looks like this: [img]http://www.bricksinmotion.com/forums/extensions/pun_bbcode/buttons/Oxygen/img.png[/img]

You could use the NXT buttons sensor to detect the push of a certain button (left makes pan go left five degrees, right makes pan go right five degrees and enter could be used for any other purpose) If you want, I can make you a program that does it well. Of course I would need to see your robot too.

Using a servo motor and the NXT could you get the motor to move in small increments at the touch of button, and then connect the motor to a mechanical panning system? The panning rig could be rack and pin and depending how big you set the increments of movement you could change the speed of the panning movement.
