What I recommend, and a few members here do this (namely MindGame), is to run Windows within MacOS X. Bootcamp or VMWare will do this quite nicely, and there is only one hard drive to save stuff to, making for easy access. Usually, Windows is used for the frame capture, and OS X is used for the editing. However, there are some fairly powerful editing programs for Windows, and there are some frame capturing programs for Macs, so don't dis-count either one.

@topitmunkeydog, I will just tell you now that strong opinions, like yours on things such as operating systems, can cause flame wars. So tread lightly.
just talking from personal experience. windows may have improved from since I had one but I still prefer macs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4lH7RT9HkE this video should help you decide

and by the way, macs are shiny. Another point for mac!

How cheap is cheap?
0 - 200  , 200 - 400 :) , 400 - 600 :| , 600 - 1000 :/ , 1000+ :o ? And what currency are we talking about here?!
Also I would reccomend not getting the cheapest laptop possible for animating, as you do need to have a bit power for some of the editing programs atleast! Maybe look around the 400 - 600 mark.

Uh, that was part of the "nerdy joke", I think. An HP is good, that's what I use, and it runs Windows 7, the best PC OS. PC's have more compatability with webcams and frame-capture software, so PC is ideal for animating.
