This is actually called "Rotoscoping" as many softwares have this feature (which is EXTREMELY useful at times) such as iStopmotion, SMP, and others. I find it useful for complex moves too.

It isn't called rotoscoping, actually. Roto consists on, basically, drawing shapes/masks/outlines. It isn't the same thing that it is from an animator's standpoint, equivalent to onion-skinning because it isn't the same process he's talking about.

Movements like walking don't work with this method because minifigs have different proportions, don't have knees and take larger steps (in scale). It can work with arm movements and things like that (as long as the video has no elbow movements...)

I did it once when recreating a scene from Whose Line is it Anyway...

It's a very good idea. I'm doing this for a CGI film. It's a pretty good alternative to motion capture. Just bear in mind - if you're using LEGOs, you have to bear in mind that the joints are different.
Give it a shot. If it doesn't work out, it'll serve as an informative experience.

Hey all,

What are your opinions on shooting yourself doing action and like... counting the frames it takes your to do it and transposing that to your minifigs?

Anyone ever do this?
