First of all, practice makes perfect. If you don't keep making animation tests, you'll never be good at it.

Second of all, some good equipment is pretty important, too. Get yourself a nice place to animate (like a table), together with some lamps (preferably at least 3) and camera (a high-end webcam will work great), build yourself a set and you're good to go, technically. Of course, you will need a story to tell, but where you get your inspiration from will be up to you.
